On Monday, September 2nd, families and surfers alike celebrated Labor Day at Doheny State beach with a shocking appearance of a tiger shark pup. At 10 am, the beach filled with people seeking to find a place to begin setting up the beach chairs and tents. But celebrating Labor day wasn’t the only thing that was occurring that day.
Life from sea had arrived at shore, parents and children were shocked to see a deceased Tiger shark pup, that was fully intact, on land. It became a spectacle of family and children alike seeing up close and being able to touch the pup. “I had traveled 2 hours to come and enjoy the beach with my family, it was worth it” said Marito Ortega who had traveled with his family, they also had the opportunity to see this pup and take photos with it. Ortega then continues on about how they reacted to seeing the Tiger shark pup. “I never thought I would see one ever, it was crazy but cool at the same time” he even shared it with his online friends that very moment.
At one point, children had also begun holding the pup and taking it to show other strangers. They were later reprimanded on removing the animal from its original spot. As the onlookers grew, It had truly peaked high interest amongst all and how it even came on shore.
Curiosity had grown in this crowd, wondering and asking how this pup met its death, or if it had been an accidental kill since the jet skis and boat dock was nearby the coast. It had minimal damage to the body so it was unknown of the cause of death for this animal. It also became a learning opportunity for the youth to understand this species better and how aquatic life specifically in Doheny State Beach will be at its peak during this season. Doheny State Beach is known to have active sharklife be sighted near their shores at this time of year.
As time had passed and families had returned to celebrating with their families, life guards had thrown the pup back into the water. “That pup can be food for any other wildlife, it’s how life is” stated one life guard on the beach. Which left the remaining beachgoers still curious as to what happened to this Tiger shark pup.
