While attempting to catch a fish with nothing but a hook, bread crumb, and fishing line, a large catfish escapes the child’s grasp leaving the boy skunked and crushed by his loss.

A devastated little boy lost the biggest catch of his life over Labor Day weekend while attempting to catch a fish with nothing but a hook, bread crumb, and fishing line. Oliver Schurkman celebrates Labor day weekend with his family and the many visitors of the lake. On a hot summer’s day in the middle of Lake Mead, Nevada young Oliver Shurkman 3, attempts to catch a fish without a fishing pole. Oliver’s father Jared Schurkman, 33 thought of this idea while a visible swarm of catfish, blue gill, and striped bass swam by the group of boaters.

“I can see them with my polarized glasses” Jared states as he excitedly ties on a hook and steals the last piece of bread the family has for lunch. First person to try this unorthodox method of fishing was Jared’s nephew Joey Volker, 8. The fish takes the bait and before the family can say “fish on” Joey runs the fish to shore. Next up, is Mr. Schurkman’s son Oliver. Oliver tosses the hook and bait out and once again a fish bites immediately. Startled by the pull Oliver lets go of the fishing line and the catfish swims away only being a few feet in distance from shore. Oliver is left devastated by his loss and cries while Jared ties another hook. “We’re not giving up buddy” Jared exclaims while baiting the hook.

This time Jared lets young Oliver throw the bait and hold the line but Jared, now wiser, holds on to the line in Oliver’s hand. Shortly after the bait was tossed Oliver gets a second chance. A fish chomps the hook and Jared and Oliver, together, run to shore and reveal their catch of the day. A two pound catfish is the prize and as Jared removes the fish from the hook Oliver’s little voice chimes in stating “That’s so cool, I’m so happy”. Now with the tears dried up and a smile beaming on the previously shattered child’s face, the day was saved and no child was left skunked on labor day.
