Women’s basketball suffer from close defeat
By Greg Avetisyan |Staff Writer| 5.6 seconds were all that stood between the girls basketball team and victory in their season opener against California Baptist University on Saturday Nov. 9. The game was extremely close throughout the night, resulting in fans hanging on the edge of their seat all the way till the final minutes. After the Coyotes last stole the ball, senior guard Tayllor Gipson was fouled with just over five seconds remaining. Gibson went to the free throw line and knocked down both of the free throws, giving the Coyotes a lead. Seconds later, the Lancer’s freshman guard Erin Asher made a desperate shot at the buzzer to derail the Coyotes. The final score … [Read more...] about Women’s basketball suffer from close defeat

Furthermore, Jones now leads the CCAA with seven overall shutouts this season. Burlesque workshop sassifies students
By Gabbie Corral |Staff Writer| The glamour, glitz and risqué art of burlesque dancing comes to CSUSB. The Women’s Resource Center in the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) held a workshop on May 7 that taught students the history and evolution of burlesque dancing as well as choreography typically found in modern performances. “I’ve always liked burlesque. I’ve seen it on TV and I just love the costumes, so joining my friend was fun even though I wasn’t that good at the moves,” said student Carolina Mejia. Burlesque dancing first originated in Europe during the early 18th century as a form of theatrical entertainment performed primarily by women. The early performances were … [Read more...] about Burlesque workshop sassifies students
WRC Clothesline Project
By Nin Garcia |Staff Writer| Back in the day when laundry was hung on clotheslines to dry, many women took the opportunity to meet and share stories through the wire, airing out their dirty laundry. The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) is taking a modern approach to this old idea to provide closure and peace for the women of today. The WRC held its annual Clothesline Project April 16—20 to encourage all survivors, students and friends who have been affected by domestic abuse to try their hand at an artistic outlet. The t-shirt workshop encouraged participants to design a shirt with any writings or drawings of personal feelings in order to get closure and move on from the obstacles … [Read more...] about WRC Clothesline Project
The WRC crosses the line with vagina pops
By Rachel Cannon |Copy Editor| As a self-described feminist and active advocate of women’s rights, it’s always tough to call out organizations that are working to advance women in any way. That said, I’m sorry to say I have a slight beef with the SMSU Women’s Resource Center (WRC) regarding its promotional methods for certain events. This past year, the WRC has sponsored a number of events at CSUSB. Each of these events are described to provide both men and women on the campus and the community with valuable information regarding women’s issues. The WRC has hosted talks on important issues ranging from self-mutilation to self-defense. The center has also hosted great events such … [Read more...] about The WRC crosses the line with vagina pops
“We did it for you”empowers CSUSB women
By Emerald Collins |Staff Writer| Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the “Star Spangled Banner” at the sight of the American flag still standing, but if it were not for the woman who spent a considerable amount of time sowing that flag, Scott’s inspiration would have never manifested. CSUSB’s Women Resource Center (WRC) has brought the play “We Did It For You: Women’s Journey Through History” written by Thea Iberal, to our campus. The production educates the audience on women's rights and suffrage throughout U.S. History. “The musical is a call to action through a tour of the past, a powerful vehicle for creating a sense of empowerment in girls and women. Organizations and … [Read more...] about “We did it for you”empowers CSUSB women
Religious controversy sparks over birth control mandate
By Melissa Benton |Staff Writer| The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Jan. 20 that all employers, including religious affiliated institutions, must provide contraception coverage in their health plans for all employees. Roman Catholic bishops and other religious leaders severely opposed this mandate claiming it as a violation of religious liberty. Pres. Obama amended the plan on Feb. 10 requiring all health insurance companies offer employees free contraceptives for all religious affiliated institutions, including churches, hospitals and universities. Many Democrats and others who support Obama’s contraceptive plan believe that this is for the greater good. The … [Read more...] about Religious controversy sparks over birth control mandate
