WANTED: More Women in STEM

March 4, 2020 by Linda White Leave a Comment

“Men may have landed on the moon, but it is the hidden ‘human computers,’ the women in STEM, like Katherine Johnson, who charted the path for their safe landing and back. They may be invisible at times but they have an impeccable impact. There are many such women in STEM and they are critical for our future discoveries. Let’s make such role models visible,” Sastry Pantula, Dean, College of Natural Sciences, CSUSB Women have participated in scientific breakthrough developments throughout history and in many instances, milestones have been made and women were nameless working behind the scenes. One prominent example is Katherine Johnson, who passed away February 24, 2020, at 101, and … [Read more...] about WANTED: More Women in STEM

Women and Division

May 8, 2018 by Ana Tapia Leave a Comment

As division is a prominent issue in our society particularly among women, gender division is often overlooked and not taken seriously. A workshop titled “You Go Girl: Building Communities Rather Than Division” was held in the Lower Commons on April 11 to inform the CSUSB community about struggles that women face. Therapist Gwendolyn Brower-Romero presented the workshop as part of the Counseling and Psychological Services Spring 2018 Wellness Workshops.  One of the struggles women face is from other women who feel the need to constantly compete with and criticize them in everything they do. According to the Counseling and Psychological Services website, the … [Read more...] about Women and Division

Time of the month

November 9, 2017 by Breeze Rivers Leave a Comment

Each month, Mother Nature curses women with a menstrual cycle, but there are ways to make a period less dreadful. Depending on irregularity and birth control use, a woman's period normally lasts about two to seven days and comes along each month. Along with a menstrual cycle comes many side effects such as moodiness, abdominal cramping, bloating, food cravings, breast tenderness, headaches, fatigue and acne breakouts. With all of this going on in a woman's body, the last thing on her mind is the thought of exercising. However, just a 30-minute workout during a period can help relieve some of those annoying period-related symptoms. Most women would agree that working out or playing … [Read more...] about Time of the month

Los Angeles was just one of many cities that held the march, which originated in Washington D.C. The march started from Pershing Square and would have lead up to City Hall but due to the amount of protesters, the march split up and took over many blocks in the City of Angels. According to the Women's March LA Twitter page, an estimated 750,000 people attended. Women's reproductive rights, immigration, LGBTQ support and human rights were some of the motives behind thousands of people walking. Women belong in the Resistance

January 26, 2017 by Brittanie Gutierrez 1 Comment

By Brittanie Gutierrez |Staff Writer| I have always been passionate about women's rights; I've always wanted to let people know that my rights were not for negotiation. I never imagined marching next to others with the same emotions, fears and hopes. So when Women's March Los Angeles was formulating, I knew I wanted to take part of it. Being a woman devastated and afraid of the future of my rights, I deemed it vital that I went to this march; it was not an option—I had to go. The morning of the march, I knew nothing but good things were going to happen. After the first stop on the Metrolink, I knew this movement was going to be big; the train had reached maximum capacity … [Read more...] about Women belong in the Resistance

Makeup for self-enjoyment

June 9, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Destiny Guzman |Staff Writer| I love makeup; therefore, I wear it! It is like art on your face. However, sometimes I catch myself wearing it for others. Some women wear makeup in order to impress men, but I believe that it is more fulfilling to wear it for yourself. Doing something in order to impress others or for a chance that they might like you is not a healthy way of thinking. "In today’s society we have so much pressure to have to look a certain way," said student Alexandra Winner. People will like you if you are who you are. If wearing makeup is something that you enjoy, then that is part of who you are. Some people think that by wearing makeup, you are hiding behind a mask, … [Read more...] about Makeup for self-enjoyment

Weightlifting for Women

May 16, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Jacob Strangis |Staff Writer| Some female students at CSUSB do not believe weightlifting is a fitness necessity for women. Weightlifting is viewed by some, as either intimidating or as something that is masculine and could potentially hinder their feminine appearance. When a small sample of female students were asked if they lifted weights on a regular basis, all of them said, “no.” “I associate weightlifting with muscle mass and bulkiness,” said student Angelica Ramos. There is a clear assumption that muscle growth on women is potentially “unattractive” or “manly” and that cardiovascular exercises are all that is needed to achieve and or maintain a desirable … [Read more...] about Weightlifting for Women
