By Amy Cutillo |Staff Writer| Coyote water polo had a rough time last weekend as they were unable to pull away with a victory during their final weekend of play this season. The Coyotes played their last match against Sonoma State and lost a tough contest, 18–9 . Georgianna Brau and Meghan McCarthy scored three goals apiece, but were unable to rally their teammates who trailed 6–0 through one quarter and 10–2 at halftime. The Coyotes battled throughout but came up short. The loss ended their season with an overall record of 4–37. Altogether, it was a rough season in general. Water polo loses to No. 19 Cal State Northdridge
By RAY BEASLEY |Staff Writer| The water polo team fought valiantly against the heavily favored 19th ranked Cal State Northridge Matadors on April 22. Unfortunately, they were unable to achieve any momentum and suffered another heartbreaking loss with a score of 8–21. The game was a challenging one for the Coyotes, but junior sensation Misty Vu, the team’s leading scorer, was able to score six of the team’s eight goals. Her teammate Jasmine Duran scored the remaining two. Vu and Duran were not the only Coyotes to have stellar performances. Goaltender Kelsey Purkiss was able to achieve 15 saves, which was more than the total of the opposing team’s two goalies combined. Water polo keeping heads above water
By Ray Beasley |Staff Writer| Exciting water polo action took place on April 15 when the Coyotes took to the pool to nearly defeat the heavily favored Sonoma State Seawolves. The Coyotes took an early 3-1 lead over the Seawolves and led by as many as three goals as they led 6–3 at one point. Unfortunately they could not maintain the momentum as they were outscored 0-5 in the second quarter. The Coyotes were able to counter with three additional goals of their own, but the Seawolves were able to add five more of their own, winning the contest 10–9. Water polo falls short despite valiant effort
By Ray Beasley |Staff Writer| Despite an incredible comeback attempt during the final three quarters of the game, water polo lost their weekend match up on April 7 against Fresno Pacific, 13–15. The Coyotes were trailing Fresno Pacific 1–6 after the first quarter but outscored their opponents 12–9 over the final half of the game. Despite the amazing effort the Coyotes made during the last half of the game, Fresno Pacific handed the Coyotes their 26th loss of the season. Water polo starting to get on track
By Alexandra Cannady |Staff Writer| Water polo kept their heads above water, defeating Gannon University 12-11 in overtime at the Chapman Mini Tournament, Feb. 25. The Coyotes entered the fourth quarter down by one goal when Captain Misty Vu scored from half-court with one second remaining, sending the match into overtime. “The game was stressful but we did not stop playing until it was over,” said Vu. The squad executed their set offense with Vu scoring eight of the 12 goals made during the match. Water polo itches to scratch win column

Though down, the team is not out and continues to practice hard, working on adjustments that will improve the team’s performance. Recently, the team participated in the Occidental Mini tournament Feb. 11 versus the Azusa Pacific Cougars and Occidental College. The Coyotes came up short in both matches with a score of 16-11 against Azusa and 20-7 in the match against Occidental. Coach Sarah Reneker’s squad had the game all tied up in the first quarter 2-2. Polo struggles to tread water

The team is off to a disappointing start after two straight years of subpar performances. The team started off the season with a 3-3 record but immediately lost 7 straight and an average team would start to have doubts about their ability to compete. But this is not an average team.
