Vox pop: How are CSUSB athletes staying in shape during the pandemic?

December 1, 2020 by Alyssa Beck 349 Comments

CSUSB student athletes tell us whether or not the pandemic has made it difficult for them to stay in shape.  Photos of the student athletes were provided by the CSUSB Athletics department. Justine Ziranda - Cross Country; Senior, Art Education Major "Being on both the cross country and track and field team have been very different and difficult during this time. Having your teammates next to you every practice motivates you to do better, and we don’t have that right now. Running on our own can only do so much for us. We like competing and seeing our progress over time. Running on our own doesn’t give us the push that most of us need. But to stay positive, I’ve made one of my … [Read more...] about Vox pop: How are CSUSB athletes staying in shape during the pandemic?

History of Coyote volleyball

May 24, 2017 by Alexis Da La Cruz 148 Comments

By Alexis De La Cruz |Staff Writer| This year was just one of many great seasons for Coyote volleyball. The sport that has been a part of our school since 1984 and has had a long history of ups and downs. The history of this program is unique compared to others at CSUSB because there have only been two coaches throughout the 33 years the team has been around. The first coach to lead the Coyotes in the NCAA Division III was Naomi Ruderman, who led the team to a 9-4 overall season record in her first year. Ruderman’s best season saw the Coyotes finish with a record of 36-8 overall. During her six years as head coach, the team made five NCAA West Regional … [Read more...] about History of Coyote volleyball

Pack the house everyday

January 30, 2017 by Kieron Coleman 132 Comments

By Kieron Coleman |Staff Writer| Supporting athletes on their game days is something that can be a decisive factor when it comes to victory or defeat. Student support so far has been very timid when it comes to game days, which perhaps affects in some of the athletes' games. Men’s and women’s soccer both advanced to the playoffs this past season after both performing better than expected. Women’s volleyball had another outstanding season, winning the conference and making the regional semifinals. As a whole, our athletes are trying to get the backing of the students to come down to watch the games and support the ‘Yotes. “Fans showing up to the game is always a bonus, … [Read more...] about Pack the house everyday

Coach Spotlight on Kim Cherniss

October 16, 2016 by Archived posts 161 Comments

By Gregory Gammill |Staff Writer|  The woman's volleyball team looks to make it back to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament under the instruction of veteran head coach Kim Cherniss. Cherniss has been the main person in charge of the volleyball team for the past 25 years and is entering her 26th year. She took over the program in 1991 and eventually brought the Coyotes back to their winning ways. Things got off to a slow start for her, but quickly picked up in 1997 when she turned the team around from a 13-15 record in 1996 to a 20-11 record in 1997. Players came and went over the years for her and the Coyotes, allowing her to move people around and … [Read more...] about Coach Spotlight on Kim Cherniss
