By Cherie Brower |Staff Writer| Faculty salary negotiations remain at an impasse—which may lead to a strike—as the California Faculty Association (CFA) and the California State University (CSU) system stall over 2015-16 and 2016-17 contracts. Scholarly voices in favor of “fair compensation” rise against representatives rallying for reasonable budget expectations, while common footing has yet to be found. Beginning on Oct. 19, and continuing through Oct. 28, more than 25,000 faculty members from across the 23 CSU campuses will participate in a strike authorization vote, which will be organized by the California Faculty Association. Obama convinces 300 companies to look past unemployment stigma
By Daniel DeMarco |Assistant Features Editor| President Barack Obama announced a pledge list signed by more than 300 companies to agree to no longer discriminate against potential applicants who have been long-term unemployed. “Twenty-one of the nation’s 50 largest companies and 47 of the top 200” were among the companies involved in this agreement, according to The New York Times. Notable names include: Apple, Wal-Mart, AT&T, General Motors, McDonald’s, eBay, Ford Motor Company, and Pepsi. Interfaith center opening on campus
By Daniel DeMarco |Staff Writer| The Student Union has just opened a new nondenominational religious/faith center where religious based groups may go to host meetings or to simply hang out. The Interfaith Center is on the second floor between the administrative office and The Blue Coyote Pub And Eatery. According to Mark Day, executive director of the Student Union Administrative Office, it is only a soft opening. The grand opening is going to be in January 2014. It will be treated like any other center in the Student Union, except that there will not be a paid staff. It will be volunteer based. Food quantity shrinks while prices go up
By Daniel DeMarco | Staff Writer| Food quantities, prices, and selection have stirred controversy across the CSUSB campus. Allegations center around decreasing portion sizes with prices remaining the same or rising. Some believe the increase in minimum wage may be the cause of these perceived changes. According to Dave Janosky, general manager of Sodexo at CSUSB, minimum wage has nothing to do with portion or price changes. Sodexo is the company that manages most of the food on campus such as the Commons cafeteria, the Student Union food court, and the various food concession stands. On Wed., Feb. 6 the SMSU's Pride Center held their annual fiery event that has attracted many professionals to CSUSB. Feminist Rory Dicker visits CSUSB

The lecture was held in the San Manuel Student Union Event Center. Professor Janet Kottke introduced the keynote speaker by asking the audience, “If we do not need a wave of feminism now, when?” It was then that CSUSB students and staff gave a warm Coyote welcome to Rory Dicker. Burlesque workshop sassifies students

The Women’s Resource Center in the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) held a workshop on May 7 that taught students the history and evolution of burlesque dancing as well as choreography typically found in modern performances. “I’ve always liked burlesque. I’ve seen it on TV and I just love the costumes, so joining my friend was fun even though I wasn’t that good at the moves,” said student Carolina Mejia.
