By Cherie Brower |Staff Writer| Tuition hikes may be on the horizon for Cal State students. A 12-member university leadership panel, appointed last year by CSU Chancellor Timothy White, recently concluded that state funding is no longer adequate for the growing university system. Higher tuition fees have been deemed by the panel as an “appropriate” step to increase income. “Enrollment demand continues to exceed capacity, which presents a dilemma for the CSU,” according to the panel report. The panel’s proposal, which was outlined by the Los Angeles Times, would include a 2 percent annual tuition increase, in accordance to California inflation rates. The 2 percent increase … [Read more...] about Higher tuition projected for CSUs

Students question success fee
By Emmanuel Gutierrez |Staff Writer| Are you aware of the fees you pay? CSUSB has adopted “Success Fees” in 2011 to improve programs and services and increase timely graduation rates. The fees are meant to improve advising and tutoring programs, career services, improved wireless access technologies, online-course delivery and improved “smart classrooms,” according to Huffington Post. “There is a greater push to provide online instruction, greater attention to wireless technology(eduroam),” said Dr. Mayo Toruño, professor and chair of the economics department. “I have no way of knowing, however, whether these changes are directly related to the implementation of the ‘Success … [Read more...] about Students question success fee
Popular classes may cost more for students
By Brenda Servin |Staff Writer| Community colleges will be able to increase the tuition of high-demand classes now that Assembly Bill 955 was signed into law by California Governor Jerry Brown. The two-tier system will be used to aid community colleges with their budget crisis. According to The Huffington Post, “Budget cuts have put California Community College enrollments at a 20-year low, with an estimated 600,000 students losing access to education because of slashes to courses and instructors.” With this new pilot program, only students who are able to afford the increased class rates will be able to get the high-demand classes, such as prerequisite courses, leaving those … [Read more...] about Popular classes may cost more for students
Students campaign for funding higher education
Tiffiny Gaston |Staff Writer| With college tuition on the rise and the funding for higher education on the decline, the Campaign for the Future of Higher Education (CFHE) has stepped in to find ways to fund education. The main focus of the CFHE is to help faculty, staff and students voice their opinions on funding for higher education. If education is not funded, California will reach zero funding for public higher education in 2052. According to CFHE, state support for higher education will zero out in 24 other states, leaving roughly 10 states with continued support by 2100. The CFHE was launched in order to secure affordable and accessible higher education for all groups of … [Read more...] about Students campaign for funding higher education

Governor Brown Pushes For Prop. 30
By Brenda Acuna |Staff Writer| Nov. 6 marks a historic election for college students across California as they hit voting booths and determine the fate of public universities’ economic situation. In a recent conference call with CSU newspapers, Gov. Brown urged all college students to vote “yes” on Proposition 30 if they did not want their tuition to increase again. During the 25-minute call, the Governor told the CSU newspapers that his tax measure comes down to a simple choice for voters: either provide funding for schools or allow additional education cuts that will hike up college tuition. Brown warned that if Proposition 30 fails, $1 billion would be cut from higher … [Read more...] about Governor Brown Pushes For Prop. 30
Bill would integrate students onto Board of Trustees
By Katherine Valadez |Staff Writer| Students who are tired of rising tuition may soon have the opportunity to have more of their voices heard on the Board of Trustees that oversees the 23-campus CSU system. Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco/San Mateo, announced a bill on Feb. 15 that would diversify the CSU Board of Trustees. The legislation would increase the number of students and faculty trustees as well as add non-faculty employees to serve on the board. “For too long, we have seen the Board of Trustees fighting for their top executives,” Yee said in a press release. “No longer will the Board of Trustees be an exclusive club of just wealthy Californians, but instead it will be … [Read more...] about Bill would integrate students onto Board of Trustees
Coyotes need to howl for a change
By Lizbeth Lopez |Staff Writer| CSUSB has been too slow in demonstrating our discontent with the tuition hikes compared to other CSUs. We should all know by now that they have gotten out of hand. For a CSU campus that currently enrolls more than 17,500 students, why does Occupy CSUSB, which expresses the belief that we should protest on our campus, have only 112 likes on Facebook? Yes, students have gathered in front of the Pfau Library to protest the rising fees and effects on the quality of higher education in California, but that turnout has had minimal effect. In a previous Coyote Chronicle article, it was reported that a meeting facilitated by CSUSB’s Student for Quality … [Read more...] about Coyotes need to howl for a change
The Uselessness that is Course Clickers
By Kimberly "Charlie" Treloar |Staff Writer| There is no denying that advancement in technology has changed the way we receive our education now. In addition to paying for tuition and books, students now may have to purchase a clicker to be used in their courses. At what point does the hemorrhaging of our wallets and bank accounts stop? I believe that it is wrong to impose extra costs on students for the sake of participating in the latest technological advancements that don’t even work most of the time. Currently, if a student requires a clicker for the winter quarter, he or she has to spend $25.50 for the clicker itself and then another $17.50 for the access code according … [Read more...] about The Uselessness that is Course Clickers
