8 Dead and 11 Injured in NYC Terrorist Attack

October 31, 2017 by Jason P. Samp 81 Comments

A driver of a pickup truck charged down a popular bike path in Manhattan on Tuesday leaving eight people dead and 11 injured. The truck driver was shot in the stomach by a NYPD officer after running into a school bus and leaving the truck. It is the deadliest terrorist attack in New York since the destruction of the World Trade Center buildings on Sept. 11, 2001. Police identified the terrorist as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov. After crashing into the bus, Saipov ran down the roadway, waving a paintball gun and a pellet gun while yelling, "Allahu akbar." At this time, the officer discharged his weapon into the abdomen of Saipov and he was then sent to the hospital. As of … [Read more...] about 8 Dead and 11 Injured in NYC Terrorist Attack

Professors talk Islamophobia

November 7, 2016 by Joshua Adamson 9 Comments

By Josh Adamson |Staff Writer| Suspicion towards Islam and anti-Muslim hate crimes are increasing across the US. Such actions were recently seen in the arrest of three men who allegedly planned to use a weapon of mass destruction to target Somali immigrants in western Kansas.  “Social surveys indicate we are experiencing the highest level of anti-Muslim prejudice in recent history, with Muslims representing the most disdained religious faith in the United States,” stated Brian Levin, director of the CSUSB Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. Hate crimes against Muslims rose by 89 percent in 2015, according to an article by Levin in The Huffington Post. Levin anticipates … [Read more...] about Professors talk Islamophobia

Rampant US Islamophobia must cease

June 7, 2015 by Kassandra Garcia 467 Comments

By Kassandra Garcia |Staff Writer| Islamophobia in the United States has increased immensely and needs to be stopped.   For those who do not know what that term means, Islamophobia (or anti-Muslim sentiment) is an exaggerated fear, hatred and hostility toward Islam and Muslims.   “It is perpetuated by negative stereotypes resulting in bias, discrimination, and the marginalization and exclusion of Muslims from social, political, and civic life,” according to Gallup, a news source.   Some Americans are trying to justify their fear or hate toward Islam and Muslims by stating that the way they feel is justified because of what occurred during tragic events such … [Read more...] about Rampant US Islamophobia must cease

By Essence Dennis |Staff Writer| Misogyny, Transphobia, Boko Haram—these words should scare you. They are literally and figuratively detrimental to the health of women around the world, transgender individuals who are accepting themselves, and Boko Haram who are popping people off as if they were toy soldiers a toddler chucks away with no thought. “We should clothe ourselves with compassion and act in such a way that exudes kindness,” said student Nicholas Navarro. However, countless slayings and acts of violence, especially against women have occurred and are continuing to escalate. In Detroit, Mary “Unique” Spears, a mother of three, was murdered after she rejected a … [Read more...] about It’s a strange world we live in

Obama launches spy reforms of phone records

January 24, 2014 by Archived posts 8 Comments

By Clarissa Toll |Staff Writer| President Barack Obama has set out to reform the way Americans’ phone records are collected for the government’s use. Obama intends to change the way these records are obtained, but is struggling with technical and political problems. “Effective immediately, we will only pursue phone calls that are two steps removed from a number associated with a terrorist organization, instead of the current three,” said Obama in his recent speech about National Security Association reforms. Currently, the records make up a data system of numbers and call length times that can be accessed to run assumed terrorists’ numbers against. General Counsel for the NSA says … [Read more...] about Obama launches spy reforms of phone records
