By Cherae Hunt |Asst. News Editor| Reality television is anything but reality. I think reality shows have three basic story lines that I see every time I change the channel: competition, puff and fluff, and scripted "reality" television show. "By definition, reality TV is essentially unscripted programming that doesn't employ actors and focuses on footage of real events or situations," according to an article by Winifred Fordham Metz. I think it's the desire we have as an audience to watch how other people live, essentially seeing our life through the eyes of other people. Competition reality shows are the only reality shows that are real, in my opinion, because it doesn't … [Read more...] about “Reality” TV is fake but addicting

Black women suffer media degradation
By Cherae Hunt |Asst. News Editor| It disappoints me as a black woman to see myself portrayed in such a negative light in the media. Black women are seen as either sexual objects or perceived as "ghetto," even though there are plenty of women in power positions that don’t get recognized or represented. All students interviewed are black. "We want to give the appearance that we are living the good life because most songs out today say that if you aren’t drinking alcohol heavily, going to the club every weekend and sleeping with some stranger by the end of the night then your life is boring,” said student Destiny Hunter. All over television and rap music videos black women are … [Read more...] about Black women suffer media degradation
The Wire still sets the standard for television perfection
By Daniel DeMarco |Copy Editor| Some people want more from their entertainment than, well, entertainment. Unfortunately for those people, fulfilling that need can prove difficult due to the obvious reason that this sort of product is much more artistically demanding to make and thus, not abundant in supply, but also because the spotlight is often reserved for the worst of the worst in radio pop music, reality television, and further simple-minded entertainment. “The Wire” is routinely included in the lineup of countdowns for “the greatest television show/drama ever.” Entertainment Weekly announced it as number one on their list in 2013. On IMDb, the series holds a … [Read more...] about The Wire still sets the standard for television perfection

Coyotes deny celebrity worship
By Camillia Dababneh |Staff Writer| While some Coyotes deny engaging in hero worship of the rich and famous, maybe they do. “I don’t think I objectify celebrities but I do not consider them regular people in comparison to myself,” said student Amelia Murillo. “Their lives are more luxurious which makes them different in a way.” Celebrities often have fans aspire to be like them or idolize them. “Society loves the idea of having their own desires and goals visible,” said Lisa Brown, student at Los Angeles Pierce College. Most of the people that invest so much time into celebrity’s activities seem to fantasize about leading a similar life. “People wish to be rich and famous … [Read more...] about Coyotes deny celebrity worship

Reality Television: How much is too much?
by Maria Perry |Staff Writer| Reality television has become a major genre in televised entertainment, a driving force in how we carry ourselves in different social situations and an influence on how we present ourselves as individuals. It can be problematic if people start to become obsessed with a particular show or character, because they may rely too deeply on the advice or values presented by them. I believe we find watching reality television relaxing, because it is a form of escape from our own realities by putting ourselves in the reality of the character(s) from a television show, thus changing our own reality temporarily. Although some of us may not watch as much … [Read more...] about Reality Television: How much is too much?
