“Annabelle,” not for kids

October 11, 2014 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Chelsea Faler |Staff Writer| “Anabelle,” the highly anticipated spin-off of “The Conjuring,” keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat for the entire film. John R. Leonetti, the director of “Annabelle,”is also known for his work on other horror films such as “The Conjuring” (2013) and “Insidious” (2010). As someone who thoroughly enjoys this genre of film, I found this production to be one of the best horror films that has hit the big screen in quite some time. Leonetti continues to display wonderful work as he utilizes everything from suspenseful music, creepy props, and camera angles to keep your heart racing. The frightening film is allegedly based on a true story, and centers … [Read more...] about “Annabelle,” not for kids

Outlast review: Prepare to be petrified

March 11, 2014 by Archived posts 2 Comments

By Phil Ruddle |News Editor| I've disconnected myself from the real world, turned off the lights, and raised the TV volume. I'm petrified. Yet, I can't look away while being on the edge of my seat and barely able to hold the controller. "Outlast" is terrifying and one of the most original survival horror games in years, I definitely give it a four out of five rating. This game provides a different spin as there aren't any weapon upgrades, items, skill set attributes or even the ability to fight back. Your only options are to run, hide, or die. There are pacing drawbacks, the second half is not as good as the first, and some might not like the system of not being able to … [Read more...] about Outlast review: Prepare to be petrified

By Shannon Luster | Staff Writer Hold onto something because here comes “Mama!” This horror movie soared to number one in the box-office and raked in $28.4 million during its opening weekend, according to the IMDb Charts. The talented cast includes Jessica Chastain as the slow-to-warm Annabel and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as the easy-going Lucas. The feature length movie, “Mama,” is based upon a 2008 short film with the same name. Both the short and the feature were directed by Andres Muschietti. The executive producer for the movie is famed producer, director and writer Guillermo Del Toro. A movie with the name Del Toro, the master of horror, attached to it is bound to … [Read more...] about “Mama”: a mother’s love goes a long way

Neeson vs. Nature: The final showdown

February 7, 2012 by Archived posts 5 Comments

By Brian Chidueme |Staff Writer| It’s official: the combination of Liam Neeson and Joe Carnahan is a match made in hyper-kinetic cinema nirvana. Fresh off their 2010 film adaptation of “The A-Team,” Neeson and Carnahan are collaborating with each other once again. This time, it isn’t Carnahan’s blend of loud, brainless action and black humor that’s involved. Instead, "The Grey" is both a return to form and a nod to the gritty and thought-provoking undertones of Carnahan’s 2002 breakthrough hit, “Narc.” This is a homerun for Carnahan as well as a welcome change of pace from his previous mainstream offerings such as “Smokin’ Aces.” This is also yet another excellent showcase … [Read more...] about Neeson vs. Nature: The final showdown
