CSUSB’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) held their first webinar to take part in National Mental Health Awareness month. The webinar, titled “You're Not Alone: Breaking the Stigma of Mental Health for College Students” was an hour-long discussion tackling mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, that college students face. Mental health is more prominent in students, with more than 40% of students facing depression and 66% of students experiencing overwhelming anxiety. Depression and anxiety are some of the most prominent mental health issues that students experience over the course of their college career. From not knowing exactly where their future … [Read more...] about Webinar hosted to break stigma surrounding mental health

RuPaul’s Drag Convention
By Natalie Padron |Staff Writer| This past weekend marked the second annual RuPaul’s Drag Convention and let’s just say, it was inspirational. The west hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center was crawling with glamorous amazons with the hopes of meeting their favorite drag queens and iconic members of the LGBTQIA community. The venue was covered in vendors of vintage clothing, lace front wigs, nail salons and even plush toys. The back half was taken up by both past and present drag queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race. RuPaul’s costume exhibit and dressed up wax figure was a real crowd-pleaser; and right behind it all was a curtained off room where you could go get your picture … [Read more...] about RuPaul’s Drag Convention
Girls need education and innovative women need support
By Alana Roche' |Staff Writer| More females should be granted an opportunity to receive an education. We should also support women-oriented entrepreneurship in order to ensure better livelihoods. "Right now, 62 million girls worldwide are not in school," according to The Atlantic. Young girls are being deprived of learning basic skills, such as math, reading and writing, and science. It is unbelievable to me that there are 62 million girls that are deprived from receiving an education in the year 2015. I believe that we should join young girls and women in fighting to help them receive proper education and entrepreneurial support. "[That's why] last spring, the president … [Read more...] about Girls need education and innovative women need support

After high school, when in need of new living quarters, Castellanos was offered a place to live in Riverside, but in return, was expected to lend a helping hand. Troops and vets deserve respect
By Aunjolay Lambert |Staff Writer| Almost four years ago while running for President, Obama said he would bring the troops home from Iraq. Now Obama is promising the troops a lot more than just returning home; he is promising the support that the veterans and troops deserve. I love the fact that Obama is willing to give service men and women more support because our nation hasn’t really been giving veterans the respect that they deserve. Obama used a Memorial Day ceremony to say it is time for America to properly welcome home the veterans and show them respect and gratitude for the things they’ve done. Showing respect is the least we should do as Americans, seeing as though we … [Read more...] about Troops and vets deserve respect
Local businesses receive student support
By Angela E. Rodriguez |Staff Writer| CSUSB students support our community by buying from the small businesses we call our neighbors. “Small business is what drives the American economy,” said chief economist for the Office of Advocacy, Dr. Chad Moutray, in the article “Small Business Drives U.S. Economy” on about.com. During times of recession, small businesses are the ones that suffer the most, especially when they have popular, big-name competition that get millions of dollars for their business. At Paco’s Tacos restaurant off University Parkway and Kendall Drive, student Michelle Greene orders her favorite dish. There are several fast food chains that serve a similar plate … [Read more...] about Local businesses receive student support
Strikes get students noticed
By Aunjolay Lambert |Staff Writer| I believe that strikes are words being put into action, so I think they can be a effective method of getting your point across. Since the California Faculty Association (CFA) approved their two-day strike the students have been doing some striking of their own. Recently, the members of Students for Quality Education went on a nine-day hunger strike. This surprised me, but I think this may be what students need now that tuition costs keep rising and college grads are not able to get the jobs they need to pay off their student debt. I think its about time that we hear some noise from the students. “I wish I would have known we were striking … [Read more...] about Strikes get students noticed

By Chelsea Underwood [Staff Writer] Senior softball player Felicia Cervantes will always remember the great influence her family and high school coach had in helping her develop into the talented player she has become in her four years as a Coyote. Cervantes started playing softball when she was six years old and wanted to attend her brothers’ practices and games every chance she got. Her uncle noticed the passion that she had for softball and taught her the fundamentals of the game. He spent time with her in their garage, practicing hitting off a tee. He worked with her day in and day out and together they practiced to develop her complete game. “He was always there from the … [Read more...] about Cervantes credits support system for success
