By Joel Cruz | Staff Writers | CSUSB was ranked 20th in the U.S. for highest student earnings potential, according to a report by Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. However, the data comes at a cost. The list marks CSUSB as the third highest in earnings potential, behind Cal State Stanislaus at rank 19 and Cal State Bakersfield at rank six. James Estes, a professor of finance at CSUSB, believes there are many factors that contribute for such a high placement on the list and why this campus is different from the rest. “I believe that the student work ethic and dedication is higher,” he stated in an email. “I think … [Read more...] about CSUSB ranked No. 20 in earning potential

Students prepare for Finals
By Mark Mascetti |Staff Writer| I believe the best way for students to review before an exam is to read over their notes taken in class or notes they wrote while studying, and if possible, refresh in a distraction free zone. Studying extensively days before an exam is great, but I believe a quick refresh of the material right before the exam always helps. “Reading through a textbook before an exam can confuse me, so instead I’ll skim over my notes as a refresher to what I previously studied,” said student James Glenn. Some students prefer professors who post PowerPoint presentations online that allow them to do a quick review of what was taught. I have found that if I translate … [Read more...] about Students prepare for Finals
Form better study habits
By Mark Klopping |Staff Writer| Midterms, presentations and finals, oh my! The weight is still upon CSUSB students as they turn the corner towards the last weeks of spring quarter. The finish line is in sight and the light at the end of the tunnel is a dot that looks like a keychain LED flashlight. Students kept their heads down studying and getting one step closer to reaching their goals. So, what are the study habits and procedures that CSUSB students need to get the study-ball rolling? Susan Ibarra takes certain steps to ensure it all starts off well. “My first step is coffee,” Ibarra said. “I need something that keeps me sitting down for a while.” A step that most students can … [Read more...] about Form better study habits
Take written notes for better memory
By Mark Mascetti |Staff Writer| Students who take notes on electronic devices during class learn less effectively compared to students who take notes the old fashioned way, researchers have found. I agree that taking notes on paper is more effective based on my previous experiences and observations of other students in class. In addition, I believe students who take notes electronically are more distracted. A recent study published last week by a Princeton researcher, Pam Mueller, and a UCLA researcher, Daniel Oppenheimer, titled “The Pen is Mightier Than the Keyboard: Advantages of Longhand Over Laptop Note Taking” shows that taking notes on electronic devices is less … [Read more...] about Take written notes for better memory
CSUSB’s Pfau library is a gold mine for students
By Jounghun Kim |Staff Writer| CSUSB’s John Pfau Library has many resources available for students. In the library students have access to group study rooms for at least two or more people to get their work done or to make group work more convenient. Individuals cannot hold a room for a group, and any individual occupying a group study room must vacate it if a group arrives. When walking into the library you can obtain help at the reference desk located in the first floor. At the reference desk, our librarians assist users with research, reference questions, electronic databases, print resources, general Internet searching and the Pfau Library Catalog. Reference librarians … [Read more...] about CSUSB’s Pfau library is a gold mine for students
Pressure grows as finals approach
By Kim Dailey |Staff Writer| Get your note cards and highlighters out, finals week is just around the corner. Students have all different methods to prepare for their finals. Some choose to stay organized and take one task at a time. But others choose not to study and procrastinate by pulling all-nighters. Some use note-cards, highlighters, energy drinks, music, recorders, Powerpoints, lectures, books and memory to prepare for and pass their finals. Kristy Spinney said she is, “trying to finish papers and projects early, so I can begin studying. I also tape important passages to my register at work, so I will read them over and over to help me remember.” Julia Matulionis’ method … [Read more...] about Pressure grows as finals approach
CSUSB Courses Offered Around the World
By Alejandra Arana |Staff Writer| Indulge yourself in learning courses taught at CSUSB, but also offered in countries like Costa Rice, Japan, Korea and Spain. Students that are in good academic standing with CSUSB may want to study aboard. The Center for International Studies and Programs is hosting study abroad trips. There are short trip sessions that will last about a month, but there are one-year programs that students can take advantage of as well. "Programs like these are intended to motivate students to work harder with their academics so they can get out of San Bernardino and experience new places," said Elva Salgado, Study Broad Coordinator. "Some students here have never … [Read more...] about CSUSB Courses Offered Around the World
Diaries of a Jet Setter
By R. Anthony Diaz |Asst. Features Editor| Ever thought about getting lost? Well think again because once you step into the unfamiliar, you will have to think fast, and I am not talking about downtown San Bernardino. As college students many of us have traveled abroad or simply flown across the wondrous deep blue oceans to be fabulous, explore, sight-see and taste the wine. Well, that was me last week, I found myself lost. From one classmate to another I want to share my experience, offer some advice and air the dirty laundry. For most international flights it is more than likely you will be flying out of LAX unless you have a connecting flight. I must say that if you are traveling with … [Read more...] about Diaries of a Jet Setter
Study tips for a successful school year
By Yezi Cho |Staff Writer| The 2012 winter quarter is among us. Like many students, everyone expects to have straight A’s on their report cards. To make it a reality; the following study tips can lead you to a successful quarter. Go to class every day. It sounds simple but it is the most important and basic thing you should keep in mind. What kind of boss will pay a worker who did not come to work? It is ridiculous if you wish to pass the class even when you don’t attend. Every test question comes from your professor during their lectures. Go to class and get the right information from the right person, at the right place. Take notes with your own words. When you study, there is … [Read more...] about Study tips for a successful school year
Students need 24/7 Pfau for studying
by Nicole Maldonado | Staff Writer| There are not enough minutes in the day. Unfortunately, our library hours don’t accommodate all of our crazy schedules. These hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Current library hours often conflict with student work and class schedules, according to a short survey I conducted among 35 students. Over 85 percent of students polled said they would take advantage of extended hours or want the library to always be open. Patricia Fischer was asked if she thought the library should be open 24-hours, “Yes! I get off work at midnight and … [Read more...] about Students need 24/7 Pfau for studying
