The 90-million-dollar expansion of the San Manuel Student Union (SMSU) construction promises new activities and student spaces by August of 2021. The amenities and resources included in the plan of the new SMSU are based on student opinions gathered in person and via surveys. The expansion of the SMSU includes a new three-story building directly across from the current student union building. There will be a pub with outdoor seating, game room, eight-lane bowling alley, dining and lounge space, and a new bookstore on the first floor. Star War’s day
By Robert Klimper |Staff Writer| “Star Wars” fans at CSUSB were able to celebrate a day recognizing one of the most well known franchises about good versus evil, “May the Fourth.” Santos Manuel Student Union (Student Union) organizations and ASI, offered opportunities their own ways for students to enjoy the day. For those unfamiliar with the date, one of the reasons for its existence is due a pun on the popular phrase from the franchise, “may the force be with you.” This is a common phrase used by the Jedi. During the middle of the day, the Gamers Lounge was changed from its usual appearance into a “Star Wars” nerd haven with tables, music and free balloon … [Read more...] about Star War’s day
The Panza Monologues
By Erika Aguilar |Staff Writer| The San Manuel Student Union Theatre presented its first play, “Panza Monologues", on March 3, organized by the Women’s Resource Center (WRC). The play is based on the book, "The Panza Monologues,” written by Virginia Grise and Irma Mayorga. It is a solo performance based on women’s stories about their panzas, which means “bellies” in English. The book features Chicanas speaking with humor and honesty about their stories, including their panza. The panza represents as a symbol, revealing the truths about their experience with life, love, abuse, living conditions, obstacles and political concerns. SMSU potential expansion plans
By Emily Anne Espinosa |Staff Writer| The SMSU expansion project, "Re-invent," plans to re-purpose the existing Student Union and also expand the project north of the current building. "The current SMSU was renovated at a time when the enrollment was 12,000 students and today over 20,000 students are enrolled at CSUSB," stated SMSU Board Chair, Diana Hernandez Aguilar. The main purpose behind the expansion is the need to increase space and facilities for students, as enrollment and amount of daily visitors continues to increase each year. "Last year, our scheduling office turned away 185 event and meeting requests due to lack of space," stated Aguilar. In addition to more … [Read more...] about SMSU potential expansion plans
Students blasé over fees
By Mackenzie Viera |Staff Writer| Coyotes in their junior or senior year seem to lack interest in the mandatory campus fees for the services they may or may not use. CSUSB falls into sixth place of the cheapest colleges in California with an average tuition cost at $18,040, according to collegecalc.org. However, after briefly interviewing students on the cost of attending CSUSB, many were not aware of what exactly they are paying for. Let’s do the math. According to csusb.edu, the tuition fee per quarter is $1,824. Below the total tuition, students seem to overlook the small print that states “mandatory campus charges.” Multiply that amount by three quarters and you have … [Read more...] about Students blasé over fees
Campus clubs and organizations give valuable experiences
By Janeth Jaimes |Staff Writer| Involving yourself in the campus community by volunteering in clubs and organizations is crucial because you can gain educational experience while working with others. It can be difficult for many students to grasp how valuable clubs or organizations are and the connections they provide. Many students, myself included, have a lot of responsibilities outside of school, but we need to prepare ourselves to be ready for the professional fields we are entering. Being a member of an academic club can greatly improve the odds of landing a prestigious internship and or a job. I am in the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), an … [Read more...] about Campus clubs and organizations give valuable experiences

Tunnel of Oppression informs students about prejudices
By Diana Ramos |Staff Writer| As you enter the Tunnel of Oppression, you begin to see the different types of oppression people go through each day. The Office of Housing & Residential Life, SMSU Cross Cultural Center, SMSU Women’s Resource Center, Associated Student Incorporated and the University Diversity Committee hosted the 9th annual Tunnel of Oppression on March 4 and 5. On the first day, also know as the "active" day, the tour had actors in each section of oppression, which made the experience more personal. This allowed the audience to sympathize with people who have been subjected to some sort of physical, mental or verbal abuse because of their identity. The … [Read more...] about Tunnel of Oppression informs students about prejudices
Healthier food options found at the commons
By Maria Perry |Staff Writer| Limited food options at CSUSB should make students think twice about what kind of nourishment they need to be consuming. The two main on-campus food locations are the Student Union and the Commons. I think the Commons provides more healthier food option than the Student Union. While it may still serve a lot of greasy food, the Commons at least gives people the choice between eating healthy or eating junk food. The food is prepared right after you order, making it fresher. The Student Union has mostly fast food places while the Commons has different stations where students can get food. In our hectic and often rushed schedules, we tend to go … [Read more...] about Healthier food options found at the commons

In situations where we have our hearts set on something, we think we know what career path we're going to pursue, until an unexpected turn of events lead us to discover a new passion.
