CFA Prepares for Strike

January 25, 2016 by Archived posts 5 Comments

By Jordan Mitchell |Staff Writer| California State University professors take a step closer to calling a strike in the 2016 Spring quarter as a continued attempt to raise faculty earnings by five percent. The California Faculty Association (CFA) gathered on the Cal State Los Angeles campus on Jan. 19 to address their ongoing efforts and negotiations with CSU Chancellor, Timothy P. White. As of 2014, more than 50 percent of all CSU faculty members made less than $38,000 a year, according to the CFA. "CFA members here along with 26,000 other faculty in the CSU association are fighting for five, meaning a five percent general salary increase for all faculty," said CFA communication … [Read more...] about CFA Prepares for Strike

CFA strike vote tally process

November 2, 2015 by Archived posts 43 Comments

By Clarissa Toll |News Editor| Results of the California Faculty Association (CFA) strike authorization vote will be announced Nov. 4, according to a CFA press release. CFA officers and bargaining team members will be made available on many campuses for comment on the results. Faculty across 23 CSU campuses voted in-person and online from Oct. 19 through Oct. 28 to determine whether or not to strike if the CFA cannot reach a deal with CSU management that they believe to be fair. In-person votes will be tabulated by a neutral third-party, according to the CFA press release. CSU faculty have continued to push for a 5 percent general income increase throughout negotiation, … [Read more...] about CFA strike vote tally process

CSU faculty threaten to strike

October 12, 2015 by Archived posts 1,223 Comments

By Cherie Brower |Staff Writer| Faculty salary negotiations remain at an impasse—which may lead to a strike—as the California Faculty Association (CFA) and the California State University (CSU) system stall over 2015-16 and 2016-17 contracts. Scholarly voices in favor of “fair compensation” rise against representatives rallying for reasonable budget expectations, while common footing has yet to be found. Beginning on Oct. 19, and continuing through Oct. 28, more than 25,000 faculty members from across the 23 CSU campuses will participate in a strike authorization vote, which will be organized by the California Faculty Association. If passed, the vote could result in job actions by … [Read more...] about CSU faculty threaten to strike

Authorization for CFA strike begins

May 6, 2012 by Archived posts

By Jonathan Ng |Staff Writer| The California Faculty Association (CFA) has passed the vote on authorizing the first CSU system wide strike. Over 95 percent of 24,000 CSU faculty, librarians, counselors and coaches have voted in favor of “rolling” strikes, in which different groups of people on CSU campuses would go on strike for a total of two days, according to ABC News. CFA Vice President Kim Geron said, “The landslide authorization vote and our one-day strikes last fall leave no doubt that faculty have the capacity to shut down the university if an agreement cannot be reached,” according to calfac.org. Members of the CFA say they feel that they are being mistreated by CSU … [Read more...] about Authorization for CFA strike begins

CFA should vote to authorize strike

April 21, 2012 by Archived posts

By Aunjolay Lambert |Staff Writer| Knowing that the strike is so close to becoming reality makes me feel uneasy, but I do think CSU faculty should vote to strike. The faculty and staff are the heart and soul of the CSU campuses and without them it would be next to impossible to run CSU universities. Why aren’t their needs being met? Increasing student fees, tuition and denying faculty members a pay raise while the CSU Chancellor is approved a salary “supplement” is not what most students and faculty members want to hear. The California Faculty Association (CFA) is the union that represents 24,000 CSU employees who will either approve or decline a sequence of strikes which could … [Read more...] about CFA should vote to authorize strike

CFA close to strike

March 8, 2012 by Archived posts 9 Comments

cft.org

By Jacqueline Scholten |Staff Writer| The California Faculty Association (CFA) board of directors met Feb. 21 and authorized a vote to be taken in late April of union member faculty from all CSU campuses. If the majority of the teachers vote to be willing to strike the pressure will be on to resolve pending negotiations. “We send the chancellor a clear message that we won’t allow his for-profit model of high quality executive salaries and low quality education,” the CFA website said. A yes vote would authorize the Union leadership to strike. If CSU teachers go on strike, it could leave CSUSB classrooms empty if stalled negotiations are not resolved. CFA members are upset with … [Read more...] about CFA close to strike

CFA vs. Students?

CFA stands up to Reed

by Nicole Maldonado | Staff Writer | Turmoil is brewing in the world of college education. Tuition is spiking every year, classes are cut and a faculty strike looms. I think teachers striking is the worst thing that could happen to the CSU system. We already pay increasingly higher prices for tuition and now we have to deal with teachers potentially going on a full-fledged strike. Where are our tuition dollars flowing nowadays? To me, it’s right down the drain. “It is pushing back something of value and importance to us, like graduation” said student Tony Soza in regards to a possible strike. Soza is supposed to graduate in the spring. With important things like graduation at … [Read more...] about CFA vs. Students?

CFA stands up to Reed

By Veronica Natal |Staff Writer| The California Faculty Association’s (CFA) board voted to authorize a one-day strike Thursday, Nov. 17, at only two campuses according to the CFA website. The strike will be held at CSU Dominguez Hills and CSU East Bay. A CFA conference call was held on Monday, Nov. 7 where members revealed 93 percent of the statewide CFA members had voted to support the strike. The CFA board made it clear during the conference call that they are striking over Chancellor Charles B. Reed’s refusal to uphold his agreement in 2007 about faculty raises for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years. CSUSB CFA President, Professor Marcia Marx, in a former interview … [Read more...] about CFA stands up to Reed

The CFA Contract with CSU

October 7, 2011 by Archived posts 4 Comments

by Veronica Natal | Staff Writer | The California Faculty Association (CFA) is taking concerted action Nov. 17 at the CSU Dominguez Hills and CSU East Bay campuses on the bases of not receiving pay raises for their 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 years on contract, according to the CFA website.   The CFA contract with CSU called for annual raises for the faculty from July 1, 2007 to July 30, 2010, however the raises were only given for the 2007-08 year.   “The frustration with Chancellor (Charles) Reed is he says the raises cannot be given to the faculty for the 2008-2010 contract due to the budget, but the contradiction lies in how he spends the money,” says Professor Marcia Marx, … [Read more...] about The CFA Contract with CSU
