Obama convinces 300 companies to look past unemployment stigma

By Daniel DeMarco |Assistant Features Editor| President Barack Obama announced a pledge list signed by more than 300 companies to agree to no longer discriminate against potential applicants who have been long-term unemployed. “Twenty-one of the nation’s 50 largest companies and 47 of the top 200” were among the companies involved in this agreement, according to The New York Times. Notable names include: Apple, Wal-Mart, AT&T, General Motors, McDonald’s, eBay, Ford Motor Company, and Pepsi. Long-term unemployment is defined as a time of unemployment that has lasted six months or longer. By Daniel DeMarco |Staff Writer| The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, has launched, but there are other options for health insurance. Obamacare was created for a purpose presented in the official title: To provide affordable health care for the masses in the form of a marketplace. According to CNN, most Americans won’t have to use the new marketplace because they will still be getting next year’s insurance plan through work. Kerry Kelley carries on with family support

By Chelsea Underwood |Sports Editor| Kerry Kelley, a junior pitcher for the CSUSB baseball team, continues to perform on the mound but does not forget about the support he has on the stands. The support from his family has become a big part in Kelley’s career. His dad and grandpa were his coaches and has helped him grow through the years. His grandparents have shown their support in another way as well. According to Kelley, his grandparents have not missed any of his baseball games since eighth grade. Huffman: Not ready to give up basketball

By Erin Leach |Staff Writer| CSUSB student athlete Kristen Huffman is leaving the Cal State Community this year after two seasons of playing with the women’s basketball team. Huffman and the other seniors are finding it difficult to part from such a driven, dedicated team. So far this season the senior forward has played 182 intense minutes of basketball and says she doesn’t regret any of it. Huffman has put 34 total points on the board for the Coyote women. Bill suggests teachers use firearms

Rodriguez |Staff Writer| Assemblyman Tom Donnelly is in support of Assembly Bill 202 (AB 202), which would allow educational funds to be directed for training teachers in proper firearm use. This bill would permit teachers to carry firearms on campus and was introduced on Jan. 30. “We have a moral obligation that the next Vicki Soto, who is faced with inexplicable evil, that she not be left defenseless,” said to Donnelly, referring to one of the Sandy Hook elementary school teachers killed. AB 202 would permit teachers who are trained in the proper use of a firearm to carry hidden weapons without having to put their names on a list of those licensed to do so. By, Rhonda Powell |Staff Writer| In an act to reduce California’s high crime rate, residents unanimously voted in favor of the three-strikes law in 1994, sentencing repeat felon offenders to life in a state prison. If Proposition 36 passes however, this will be rule be reshaped. According to ballotpedia.org, Proposition 36, “Maintains life sentence penalty for felons with non-serious, non-violent third strike if prior convictions were for rape, murder, or child molestation.” The initiative proposes alterations to the three-strikes law only when new felony convictions are serious or dangerous. Walk-off balk ends Coyotes’ baseball playoff hopes

After Sonoma State runners advanced into scoring position on two separate wild pitches in the bottom of the ninth, third baseman Jeff Boulware scored on a walk-off balk, ending the Coyote's season in a 3-2 loss. The uneventful call given by homeplate umpire Rob Hansen was at the expense of Coyote reliever Josh Pond, who had just struck out pinch-hitter Danny Dworkin, putting the 'Yotes one out away from winning their first CCAA tournament game since 2002. The heartbreaking bottom of the ninth came after the Coyotes had back-to-back two-out hits that scored their only two runs of the game. Gov. Brown adds LGBT courses to state classrooms

By Courtney Sims |Staff Writer| California is the first state to require public schools to educate K-12 students on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, through required textbooks and mandated courses. In July 2011 Gov. Jerry Brown signed off on the historical law that requires California’s public schools K-12 to integrate LGBT into school curriculum. In a statement made by Gov. They’re big, they jump very well. I thought they did a good job with some blocking matchups,” said Coach Cherniss.
