The Reality of Cloning

March 10, 2016 by Mike Isberto Leave a Comment

By Michael Isberto |Staff Writer| Growing up I told myself, if I won the lottery, I would use my winnings to try to make Jurassic Park a reality. The only problem, I’ve learned the cloning failure rate could be 999 to 1000. And, sometimes, the “failure” produces horrible suffering for creatures created through the cloning process. The good news is these deformed beings often die quickly. Some never manifest any symptoms of life at all. I learned this from an article published by The University of Utah. “Cloning animals through somatic cell nuclear transfer is simply inefficient,” stated The Genetic Science Learning Center at The University of Utah. “The success rate … [Read more...] about The Reality of Cloning

Fading away: skin bleaching

March 1, 2016 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Jaeyeon Kim |Staff Writer| "Beauty, the saying goes, is only skin-deep. But the importance of skin goes a lot deeper. Most of us think of skin as just our body's visible outer layer," according to rd.com. Over time, cultural beauty standards dictate that paler skin is more beautiful, leading more people to want to lighten their skin. Paler skin is also related with colourism. "Colourism refers to discrimination within communities of colour towards those with darker skin. The preference for white skin is so firmly entrenched, two-thirds of Nigerian men saying they would prefer a lighter-skinned wife," stated by afritorial.com. Due to colourism, many cultures prefer paler … [Read more...] about Fading away: skin bleaching

Threatening hypersexual culture numbs American society

May 25, 2015 by Archived posts 3 Comments

Yerin Kim | Staff Writer | American society’s obsession with hypersexuality permeates every aspect of life, normalizing unrealistic and unhealthy stereotypes regarding gender and sexuality.     In Korea, although we are exposed to pornography and provocative images in the media, hypersexuality is considered shameful, rather than a normalized and acceptable culture. About two weeks ago, my friends and I went to a strip club with a giant wave of curiosity, which gave me a huge culture shock, and pushed me to consider the subject of sexuality in American society.     After passing a sign on a door that ironically read “Gentlemen’s Club,” strippers … [Read more...] about Threatening hypersexual culture numbs American society

North/South Korea Peace Talks

October 25, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Erica Wong |Staff Writer| North and South Korea’s agreement to resume peace talks beginning in November have once again elevated hopes in easing the high tensions on the peninsula. South Korean President Park Geun-hye has been calling for resumption of peace talks since February, and North Korean officials were welcomed at the Asian Games in Incheon. Since North Korea’s visit to South Korea, however, there have been shots fired between the two, agitating their already strained relationship. On Sunday Oct. 19, gunfire was exchanged across the DMZ line when North Korean soldiers approached the border and did not stop after warning shots were fired from South Korea, according to … [Read more...] about North/South Korea Peace Talks

Adjusting to life in South Korea

October 11, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Erica Wong |Staff Writer| It seemed like a dream come true when I got accepted to a school considered to be among the ‘Ivy League’ of South Korea. Yonsei University is one of the most prestigious schools in Asia, and attendance often dictates social status and determines the success of one’s future. Referred to as “SKY,” it is one of the top three schools in Korea, along with Seoul National University and Korea University. The ‘Big Three’ of Korea are synonymous with Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Yonsei University is located in Sinchon, known as Seoul’s student district. Sinchon is a lively college area, with Ewha Women’s University and Sogang University nearby. There … [Read more...] about Adjusting to life in South Korea

Studying abroad: California to South Korea

May 24, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Erica Wong |Staff Writer| Traveling 5,986 miles to a foreign country and committing to living there for an academic year is the opportunity of a lifetime. Applying to study abroad wasn’t something I had considered until one day, at the end of fall quarter, I accidentally ended up in the International Programs (IP) office. “This is one of the best programs you can take advantage of,” said Study Abroad Assistant Coordinator Emilio Rodriguez. “The programs are designed to be the same as if you were taking classes right here at your home campus.” I could choose from Australia, France, Israel, Korea, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the list went on and on. These were … [Read more...] about Studying abroad: California to South Korea

North Korea threatens missle attacks

April 12, 2013 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Aimee Villalpando |Staff Writer| With rumors circulating about North Korea’s possible missile threats, the United States continues to take preventative action despite their claims that an attack is not expected. At this point in time, the world is divided on whether or not they believe North Korea will carry out its promise of nuclear attacks on their enemies, South Korea and the United States. North Korea’s vague expressions of their intent to push the U.S. “to the brink of war” has effectively pushed most into a panic.   The President responds According to CNN, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel reassures that, “we have every capacity to deal with any action North … [Read more...] about North Korea threatens missle attacks
