April 19, 2016 by Archived posts 87 Comments

By Misty Williams | Staff Writer |  Musiq Soulchild released his anticipated album "Life on Earth" On April 15. Musiq Soulchild, also known as Taalib Johnson is a gifted Neo-Soul artist who combines Jazz, Hip Hop, and Scatting all into one. The Philadelphia native was very creative and different with his album "Life on Earth," he incorporated the sound of jazz with pop, something he has never done before. "I think it was important and innovative because you have a lot of sameness going on. Not to talk down on anything or anyone, but after a while it creates a situation. It’s like, 'Do something else now.' Everyone can’t be doing the same thing and expecting the same response," … [Read more...] about Music Soulchild converts to pop child

February 16, 2016 by Archived posts 2 Comments

By Jaynene Moreno | Staff Writer | Majid Jordan’s self-titled album dropped Feb. 5 and it’s easy to say that Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman will go far in their music career. The Toronto power duo is signed to OVO Sound. Their EP "A Place Like This" was released digitally through OVO Sound radio in 2014. They worked with Drake on his hit single “Hold On We’re Going Home” in 2013. They then collaborated again on their first single "My Love" which debuted on Apple Music’s Beats 1. “I really enjoy listening to Drake’s ‘Hold On We’re Going Home,’” said student Elmer Escobar, “but Majid Jordan can definitely hold their own and it’s been proven with this new album.” The two … [Read more...] about Ovo Sound artist, Majid Jordan

Alessia Carra is Poppin’

November 4, 2015 by Archived posts 550 Comments

By Justine Lopez | Staff Writer | The music industry needs to brace itself because Def Jam Recordings have officially signed a new artist who has taken over the charts. Alessia Cara debuted her first single, "Here," this April and has over 17 million views on YouTube. Her touch of sound is commonly linked to Amy Winehouse, which is not too bad for a 19-year-old from Ontario, Canada. Within the first week of the song's release it accumulated over 500,000 streams and became the recently added track on every teenager's playlist. Complex magazine even labeled it as one of the best Canadian songs of April, and Billboard also added it to their "20 pop songs you need for your … [Read more...] about Alessia Carra is Poppin’

By Alyssa Gradias |Staff Writer| White Denim released their fifth studio album, Corsicana Lemonade, Oct. 29. They are a four-piece, indie-rock band with a variety of music influences from blues, psychedelic rock, punk rock and soul. The band formed in 2005 and have been banging out EPs and full albums ever since. Corsicana Lemonade focuses on the aspect of growing older yet still trying to figure things out, reflecting the just-turned thirty year olds' outlook on life and where it is going. For example, lead James Petralli sings, "I know you think that it’s easy to change, but it’s a symptom of age,” reflecting their coming-of-age stage. This album is a bit different from … [Read more...] about White Denim pours a cup of “Corsicana Lemonade”

Kimbra keen on creating soulful sounds

May 20, 2012 by Archived posts

By Geselle Martinez |Staff Writer| Kimbra is a star on the rise and her new album, Vows, proves that she is destined to be on top of the charts. The 21-year-old singer from New Zealand is better known for her guest appearance on Gotye's single, "Somebody I Used to Know." The single was #1 in 10 countries. Vows is an album filled with mixed genre glossy pop, whimsical soul and fulfilling jazz renditions that show Kimbra's own writing is something to behold. While "Somebody I Used to Know" was a bitter break up song, Vows is the complete opposite. The album could be described as her personal love confessions. “I wanna raise a child/Won’t you raise a child with me,” she sings on … [Read more...] about Kimbra keen on creating soulful sounds
