Fraternity and sorority members debate about fees

May 27, 2020 by Onie Rahman 414 Comments

COVID-19 has impacted many different aspects of campus life at CSUSB — from the way we learn to the way we interact with each other. One of the main things that has impacted the student body has been not being able to fully participate in fraternities and sororities. Student are filled with some mixed opinions on fees still being charged. CSUSB has fifteen fraternity and sorority chapters that are run by Student Leadership and Development on campus. While some are exclusively men or women, at least eight or more fraternities are co-ed, major specific, honors, community service related or other types of interest. The fees involved for fraternity and sorority are what keeps them running, … [Read more...] about Fraternity and sorority members debate about fees

Start your “who” here

May 17, 2016 by Archived posts 629 Comments

By Destiny Guzman |Staff Writer| Involvement and participation in school activities create a more enjoyable and meaningful college experience. “My definition of a meaningful college experience is an experience in which you can get something out of – not just for yourself but for others as well,” said student Alberto Rendon. Rendon is an active student who is involved in a variety of organizations like the Kappa Sigma fraternity, Anime Club, Local Matters (CSUSB television production); and on top of all of that, he is the president of the Society for Student Filmmakers (SSF). Going to your classes, leaving right after and not participating in any school activities, opportunities … [Read more...] about Start your “who” here

Not all Greek organizations deserve strict regulation

October 16, 2015 by Archived posts 138 Comments

By Alana Roche | Staff Writer | I believe that the media only focuses on negative Greek organization’s behaviors because those stories attract the most attention and that is what audiences desire. However, I also believe that campus administrators should have stricter rules and guidelines preventing negative attitudes and actions. I don’t know much about Greek life because I am not in a sorority or close to anybody that is in one, so I am writing from an outsider perspective, based on what I have witnessed. My first encounter with Greek life has been on the CSUSB campus. From what I have seen in recruiting practices by sororities is that they have a huge focus on helping their … [Read more...] about Not all Greek organizations deserve strict regulation

Greek Life: A look inside

May 3, 2015 by Archived posts 3 Comments

By Cecilia Gutierrez |Staff Writer| As a sorority or fraternity member you reap many benefits. Membership benefits include leadership, involvement with school affairs, job opportunities, and networking skills. Juan Herrera, a former brother of Sigma Chi, serves as an example of how these networking opportunities attained from fraternity membership help during the pursuit of job opportunities after graduating from college. Herrera now works in CSUSB President Tomás Morales’ office (making a fair amount of money) and traveling on behalf of CSUSB. What gave him the upper-hand? Being a part of a fraternity. Many of us have seen movies that reflect the Greek Life, however, how … [Read more...] about Greek Life: A look inside

It’s time to step up that ‘Yote pride

October 7, 2012 by Archived posts

By Megan Davis |Staff Writer| What do USC and UCLA have in common besides residing in California and astronomical tuition fees? Two words: school pride. You can see students of these universities practically bleeding the colors of their institutions and showing up by the thousands to their school functions, specifically anything that involves a field or a court. So why is it that compared to these schools, our own CSUSB is seems to fall so short in school spirit? Some may say it is because we do not top the lists of best party schools or because we lack a notorious sports team or, possibly, because we are a commuter school and not too many people stick around campus after … [Read more...] about It’s time to step up that ‘Yote pride

Don’t be fooled, Greek life is more than just a party

May 6, 2012 by Archived posts

By Aunjolay Lambert |Staff Writer| I feel some people don’t understand what you can gain by being in a sorority or fraternity. I think that sometimes TV and movies can alter a person’s view of reality and I think in this case Greek organizations get the brunt of that. For example movies like “Old School” and “Animal House” can suggest that fraternities and sororities are around just to have a good time. “Some of the negative things I’ve heard are that the girls are easy and the guys just like to drink and party,” said Ashlynne Macan, a member of a co-ed fraternity at CSUSB. Last summer I went on vacation to Virginia and my cousin, who is in a sorority, showed me around her campus … [Read more...] about Don’t be fooled, Greek life is more than just a party

Grab your toga and go greek

March 18, 2012 by Archived posts 8 Comments

By Alejandra Arana |Staff Writer| If you have ever seen a person wearing Greek letters on our campus and have asked yourself if one day you could be wearing the same. The answer is yes you can. CSUSB has so many active Greek organizations on this campus that there is bound to be one meant for you. Some benefits of becoming Greek are the development of friendships with fellow students that will last forever, you will be more active on campus and your networking skills will go through the roof. There are some misconceptions about joining a Greek organization like the hazing, or humiliating acts that members make you do to prove you are “worthy” of wearing letters. Even if you are … [Read more...] about Grab your toga and go greek
