By Kieron Coleman |Staff Writer| When it comes to athletes at CSUSB, the off-season is a time where teams come together to work on strength and agility. It allows their muscles to be in the best possible condition for when the season comes around. Most college sports seasons are intense because of the large amount of games played over such a short period of time. Athletes have to do their workouts around their scheduled classes. Before the quarter starts, coaches send out times where they are not allowed to schedule any of their classes. Athletes work in a separate gym at the school, where it gives them the opportunity to work out with two highly knowledgeable coaches. "The … [Read more...] about Athletes offseason conditioning

Pack the house everyday
By Kieron Coleman |Staff Writer| Supporting athletes on their game days is something that can be a decisive factor when it comes to victory or defeat. Student support so far has been very timid when it comes to game days, which perhaps affects in some of the athletes' games. Men’s and women’s soccer both advanced to the playoffs this past season after both performing better than expected. Women’s volleyball had another outstanding season, winning the conference and making the regional semifinals. As a whole, our athletes are trying to get the backing of the students to come down to watch the games and support the ‘Yotes. “Fans showing up to the game is always a bonus, … [Read more...] about Pack the house everyday
How to: Athletes appetites
By Kieron Coleman |Staff Writer| "Without an adequate amount of carbohydrates and fats in your diet, your muscles will not get the energy they need to perform at optimal levels," according to livestrong.com. Athletes need more calories a day than a regular student to keep energy levels high throughout the educational part of the day and while performing on the field. Eating every couple of hours a day or an equivalent to four or five meals a day is recommended for most athletes when competing in season. This allows the body to meet its requirements that allow it to perform at its highest potential. By doing this, it also allows you to consume the proper amount of nutrients … [Read more...] about How to: Athletes appetites

Sports injury rehabilitation
By Kieron Coleman |Staff Writer| When a student athlete gets injured they rely on the knowledge of the athletic trainers to get back on their feet. Laura Tropila is the main trainer of the well-being and rehabilitation of our student-athletes. Tropila earned her bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and later earned her master's from the University of Arizona. With such a short season in college athletics, the training room is somewhere many would rather avoid spending their time. However, our athletes are grateful for the amount of time and effort the staff puts in to ensure the success of the teams. The athletes have protocols, provided by Tropila … [Read more...] about Sports injury rehabilitation
Men’s soccer weekly routine
By Kieron Coleman |Staff Writer| When in season, the lifestyle of soccer can be very time-consuming. The men's soccer team spends close to 20 hours a week practicing. With such an intense season, which takes place this quarter, the team has to carefully choose what they eat. They work on mobility with the trainers on campus two days a week, which helps recover or avoid pulling any muscles. “We use this time to our advantage, we do a lot of stretching and light weights in the tent, which helps us recover quicker," said goalkeeper Mike Warn. In gym sessions, they do a lot of stretching with elastic bands and lacrosse balls, which helps take the knots out of muscles. “We have … [Read more...] about Men’s soccer weekly routine

Women’s soccer takes down Warriors
By Yera Nanan |Staff Writer| The women's soccer team battled hot weather conditions and played a difficult game against the Stanislaus State University Warriors. It was evident that the 'Yotes were trying to carry the momentum of their three-game winning streak into the weekend. "We lost to them last year 1-0, so we really wanted to get them back," said midfielder Gabby Evaristo.
