Riverside’s Open Mic: Coffee & Creativity

October 10, 2017 by Yesica Gonzalez 6 Comments

Open Mic night brought people together at downtown Riverside's coffee shop, Back to the Grind, on September 25. That night, in the basement of the shop, people were in their seats ready to get another taste of the community's talent. In the crowd sat four friends, Dylan Mayer, Michael DeSantos, J.J. Garcia and Lori Knight, who came out to support their community. "I love everything about Open Mic nights--the talent, the people, the ambiance, the support--it's what people need to get away from the real world for a while," shared Knight. Open Mic nights are known for hosting a diverse array of talent ranging from poetry to live music. "Even though I don't come all the time, … [Read more...] about Riverside’s Open Mic: Coffee & Creativity

Saturation Fest..Back to the Grind supports local artists

May 31, 2015 by Archived posts 7 Comments

By Jose Alvarez  |Staff Writer| The sign reads Back to the Grind a place for all to come together, to leave all labels outside. Stepping into Back to the Grind, I found myself trying to wiggle into the crowd and unfortunately missing out on the strong aroma of coffee because I was sick. When I finally managed to take a seat, the band Gemini Fiction took the stage. Although there was another band downstairs, I did not find out until several bands had played. You can enjoy the show from either downstairs or upstairs where framed art pieces are displayed all over the walls and some even hang from the ceiling. The signs and artwork did a great job in adding to the presence and … [Read more...] about Saturation Fest..Back to the Grind supports local artists

Music aficionados grab a cup of joe

May 9, 2015 by Archived posts 6 Comments

By Jose Alvarez | Staff Writer | Augie’s Coffee House, located on 5th Street in Redlands, provides a warm family atmosphere with music, coffee, friends and events. There are many events at Augie’s throughout the year, such as “Art in the Alleyway”, which according to the manager, Blair Smith, happens quarterly. This is where they set up paintings and other forms of art in the alleyway next to the coffee shop. I originally went to Augie’s for “Jazz Night”, but I was disappointed when I found out that they no longer host it. In its place is another event called “Open Mic.” “Open Mic” is a small event that takes place once a week, every Tuesday, at around 6:30 p.m. It is in the … [Read more...] about Music aficionados grab a cup of joe

Hello Summer, so long spring

May 31, 2014 by Archived posts 37 Comments

By Taylor Vermillion |Staff Writer| Summer hasn't officially reached Southern California just yet, but the heat has definitely arrived. With temperatures hitting the triple digits, there’s no doubt this summer is going to be one of the hottest ones yet. Lucky for us that means sweater weather is in the past and it’s time to bust out the summer wardrobe. “I'm sad that I can't really wear my boots anymore, but you can't really go wrong with an adorable pair of sandals,” said CSUSB student Alicia Zapata. Zapata added, “I've always been a shorts and flip flop girl anyways, so the heat isn't really hitting my closet too hard.” Unfortunately, some of us haven't prepared for … [Read more...] about Hello Summer, so long spring
