The government is watching us

November 9, 2013 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Daniel DeMarco |Staff Writer| The coalition of congressmen have introduced anti-government surveillance legislation. This is in response to months of reports on the National Security Agency’s unlawful spying on citizens, according to a press release from the Young Americans For Liberty (YAL). “YAL seeks to identify, educate, train and mobilize students on the ideals of individual liberty and the U.S. Constitution,” as stated on their press release. The purpose of this legislation (USA Freedom Act) would be to reform the USA Patriot Act of 2001. The Patriot Act was constructed and passed in the wake of September 11, 2001. The original intent was to strengthen the … [Read more...] about The government is watching us

November 8, 2013 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Andy Quintana |Staff Writer| Those who are designated to protect the public should be armed. The recent incident at LAX that left one dead and several injured has now gotten people to think about having armed security agents. The fact is that most hired security guards are there to protect you but most are completely unprepared for the unknown. “I think that for the well being of the people, security should be given the means to protect the people from any unfortunate event,” said student Adam Ghossein. “But I think before we arm security guards with a gun, they should be properly trained and licensed.” It is not enough for security guards to be able to carry a firearm; … [Read more...] about We need armed security

Tolerance for undocumented immigrants rising

November 4, 2012 by Archived posts

By Andrew Hucks |Staff Writer| It’s been nearly 20 years since Proposition 187 was passed in California barring illegal immigrants from using publicly funded education and healthcare. According to a recent poll by USC Dornsife/LA Times, sentiments have swayed quite a bit in favor of leniency on illegal immigrants already here, while getting more stiff on border security and enforcement. Proposition 187 has five major sections: it barred illegal immigrants from using public education and public health clinics, required proof of legal status for cash assistance, required service providers to report illegals to the INS, and it made the use of false documents a felony, according to … [Read more...] about Tolerance for undocumented immigrants rising

CISPA is a threat to privacy

April 21, 2012 by Archived posts

The eye symbolizes the spying CISPA will do on internet use. The handcuffs symbolize how CISPA will take away your freedom to roam the internet

By Sara Nydam |Staff Writer| There is a new bill being considered by Congress that if passed, will eat away at your privacy. Any information shared by the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act “could theoretically end up in The Department of Defense or in the hands of the National Security Agency,” according to the LA Times. If CISPA is passed you should be worried about your privacy every time you access the Internet. “The government would be allowed to share ‘cyber threat intelligence’ with private companies and they in turn share ‘cyber threat information’ with the government to increase cyber security,” according to techdirt.com. CISPA is innocently presented as … [Read more...] about CISPA is a threat to privacy
