April 18, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Shane Burrell |Sports Editor| With competitions like the Iron Coyote, Swim the Bear, and the Mile High Challenge, we sometimes forget about the competitors that are concerned with pure muscular endurance, but the Strongest Coyote Challenge is going to change all of that. The Student Recreation and Fitness Center (Rec Center) has created a competition for men and women so that they can test their strength and endurance as competitive lifters. "The Strongest Coyote competition is a test of pure strength, explosive strength, speed, conditioning and muscular endurance through four different events," stated csusbrecsports.com. The four different events are comprised of the Tractor … [Read more...] about Strongest Coyote Challenge

Queer athletes deserve recognition

March 7, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Shane Burrell |Sports Editor| & Loydie Burmah |Opinions Editor| Queer collegiate athletes can risk their professional careers by coming out. Queer college athletes have a higher risk of risking their professional sports careers by coming out due to the lack of support from the professional sports community. Coming out is an ongoing process, and for the queer athlete revealing one’s true identity does not stop in the locker room. “Homophobia is a salient theme within both collegiate and non-collegiate male athletic subcultures,” wrote researchers Kenneth B. Muir and Trina Seitz in their participant-observational study on machismo, misogyny, and homophobia within … [Read more...] about Queer athletes deserve recognition

“Dear White People” and America

December 18, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Shane Burrell  |Sports Editor| Recent events, sparked by the protests of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, have occurred throughout the country and have made people more aware about racism and police brutality. The movie, "Dear White People" has given a representation to these events. Brown was a young man killed by a police officer in Michigan for stealing something from a convenience store, and Garner was arrested by New York police and died when they put him in an illegal choke-hold during his apprehension. In my opinion, these acts are depicted and represented perfectly by the film "Dear White People." The film, although fiction, shows how America is clearly a nation … [Read more...] about “Dear White People” and America

Oktoberfest and the Ramen festival take over Pomona

October 25, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Shane Burrell |Sports Editor| On Oct. 18, my boyfriend Peter Luu and I, made our way over to the Pomona Fairplex where Oktoberfest was held. To our amazing discovery, we found out that the Ramen Festival was held at the same time and one building over from where Oktoberfest was taking place. So we made the decision that we would stop by the Ramen Festival and have something to eat before enjoying all the beer that Oktoberfest has to offer. The Ramen Festival entry fee was $5 and only $8 per bowl of Ramen, altogether $13 for each of us. We both also got a box of Pocky, a biscuit stick like cookie dipped in chocolate. When we entered the building, we first came into contact … [Read more...] about Oktoberfest and the Ramen festival take over Pomona

February 21, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

Shane Burrell |Sports Editor| The Sochi Winter Olympics comes to its final week, ending the events and preparing for the closing ceremony. At the time of publication the United States are in the lead with a 23 medal count, followed by Russia and the Netherlands tied at 22. These great achievements have been made possible with the unconditional support from fans and fellow USA team members. Although team USA is in the lead with team medal count, there is one team member that would fall somewhat short in his expectations in earning the gold. Shaun White planned to participate in the new Slope Style event, and the half-pipe, which he has won two gold medals for in past … [Read more...] about Keeping up with the gold
