HSSBV practices safer operations for animal care

October 27, 2020 by Ana Valenzuela 200 Comments

The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley (HSSBV) continues to provide services for animals and animal lovers alike as it celebrates 50 years as a local non-profit organization. Joyce Martin founded HSSBV on March 16, 1970. According to Jill A. Henderson, Director of Development & Outreach of HSSBV, it started with a group of friends in Martin's garage, which later expanded to its own building. "The HSSBV started as a volunteer-driven dream and in 50 years we have helped over two million animals, annually serving an average of 60,000 pets," stated Teri Seymour, Executive Director of HSSBV. According to Henderson, Martin's vision was to provide programs and services that … [Read more...] about HSSBV practices safer operations for animal care

Cystic Fibrosis: Breathing in the moment

February 29, 2020 by David Rosas 8 Comments

At first glance, you wouldn’t think anything was wrong with Joel Ramirez. Stay and talk to him and you’ll swear he’s just a normal guy. Joel, 18, is a college student who likes to play video games, watch football and listen to music. But stay long enough and you’ll be there to see him wear his vibrating vest, take his 36 pills, do his five 40-minute daily breathing treatments or connect a feeding tube directly to his stomach. He has cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disease in which mucus clogs the lungs, making it difficult to breathe and rendering the body a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. According to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, 1 in 25 people have the fault gene leading to … [Read more...] about Cystic Fibrosis: Breathing in the moment

Update on San Bernardino Animal Shelter

May 15, 2019 by Destiny Johnson 578 Comments

The San Bernardino City Animal Shelter held a free adoption event on May 9. Adoption fees were waived to those who wanted to adopt a cat or dog. These events always worry volunteers and residents because of the number of animals that are returned in the following days. [su_quote cite="Jasmine Dimacali"]"Free adoptions aren't a good idea, I understand that the pets may need homes desperately. But if they're free then people are less likely to think of it as a life long commitment, and more as something that seemed cool at the moment."[/su_quote] In fact, not long after the event, one of the male pit bulls that had been adopted, shelter ID #a522999, was being given away for free on … [Read more...] about Update on San Bernardino Animal Shelter

Blacklight party slides into San Bernardino

May 7, 2019 by Bobby Horner 842 Comments

The Blacklight Slide event, hosted by Cool Events, LLC, hit San Manuel Stadium on May 4. This event featured two water slides, with four slides each, flowing with neon glow-in-the-dark water that ensured participants were flushed with color by the time they reached the bottom. The event was free. However, when registering, a small donation and a medical coverage fee were required. Included in the registration was a towel with the logo for the event. The event began at 6 p.m. before the sunset which allowed participants to use the slides in daylight, as well as in the dark when the black lights were turned on. The event was open to all ages. To use the water slides, a tube was required. … [Read more...] about Blacklight party slides into San Bernardino

San Bernardino Inspires Photographers

January 23, 2019 by Alan Arreola 124 Comments

San Bernardino is the second largest city in the Inland Empire and most popularly known for its location on the historic Route 66. Due to the city’s limitations and financial crisis, art is not an important component of the city. The closest thing to art located in San Bernardino is the San Bernardino County Museum and a much smaller museum located at CSUSB. There is very little opportunity to blow up as an artist in San Bernardino, but there are still young aspiring artists who do not let the city’s limitations hold them back from achieving their dreams. Investigating dead bodies

June 4, 2017 by Manuel Sandoval 396 Comments

By Manny Sandoval |Distribution Manager| A Deputy Coroner is a crucial career within law enforcement. From conducting investigations to determining the cause and mode of death, contacting descendants of the deceased, to helping families go about making the tough transition during such a trying time, Deputy Coroners wear many hats and put themselves on the line when in the field. A Deputy Coroner is someone who investigates death. We had the opportunity to sit down with the County of San Bernardino Deputy Coroner Marlene Leyva to discuss how one can become a Deputy Coroner. We covered her journey to success, and discussed the critical aspects that come along with this gut … [Read more...] about Investigating dead bodies

The Real Action is Under Water

May 29, 2017 by Arthur Medrano 11 Comments

By Arthur Medrano |Staff Writer| The water polo community in Southern California is getting a new representative in our backyard, the the San Bernardino Water Polo Club. Looking for kids from 10-18 years old, the club provides them with an opportunity to learn how to swim and compete competitively with neighboring cities. Owner Angel Servin and head coach Peter Gonzalez had the dream of introducing this club after their previous water polo coach inspired them to bring the aquatic sport to everyone in the Inland Empire. "This is a good way for the kids to become active and be a part of something during summer instead of being at home watching TV and playing video games," said … [Read more...] about The Real Action is Under Water

The DEN: fighting food insecurity

May 22, 2017 by Brittanie Gutierrez 8 Comments

By Brittanie Gutierrez |Staff Writer| Food insecurity is a topic that is rarely brought up, often excused by the thought "not happening to me, so it must not be happening." But it's more common than we think. According to the California Association of Food Banks, one out of eight Californians suffer from food insecurity, that's 5.4 million people that do not know where or when they will be getting their next meal. The DEN is CSUSB's very own food pantry that provides students who are going through food insecurity with food and hygiene products. “Our food bank is unique in that it is almost exclusively stocked by the campus. When we look at other campuses, they have external … [Read more...] about The DEN: fighting food insecurity

SB fights against poverty

May 21, 2017 by Saeed Villanueva 410 Comments

courtesy Samaya Skeeters

By Saeed Villanueva |Staff Writer| San Bernardino fights scarcity by concentrating on homelessness and providing food for lower-income families, but the numbers show the city still has a long way to go in their efforts against poverty. San Bernardino has been through a lot since the city filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and has made gradual improvements to rebuild its economy each year. The county has made strides to improve its homeless situations by creating programs that find shelter for them. The Stepup program has found shelter for plenty of homeless people within the last year. “There are 131 individuals who are chronically homeless and we’ve managed to find shelter for 50 … [Read more...] about SB fights against poverty
