Instructors don’t get CSU support

March 7, 2015 by Archived posts 43 Comments

By Taniya Harwell |Staff Writer| The California Faculty Association (CFA) has released the first document in their “Race to the Bottom” series, exposing how the Cal State University (CSU) system has failed to support its instructors. The “Race to the Bottom” series is a compilation of evidence by the CFA documenting the lack of wage increases for CSU instructors in the last 10 years. “It’s time at long last for the university to fix 10 years of problems,” said Lillian Taiz, a CSULA history professor. The expose shows how, in comparison to other higher education systems, CSU management has failed to invest in their faculty. For example, over the last 10 years, the average … [Read more...] about Instructors don’t get CSU support

Professors protest against low salaries

October 11, 2014 by Archived posts 2 Comments

By Daniel DeMarco and Marlyn Rodriguez |Features Editor & Asst. Managing Editor| Faculty began protesting outside the San Manuel Student Union (SMSU) at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 8, 2014. Their protest concerned faculty wages that they claim have not been raised in eight years. Approximately 30 faculty and staff members stood outside the main entrance of the Student Union holding picket signs and marching for their cause. An abundance of students were watching and supporting the protesting staff. Every faculty member carried a sign, all with different slogans written on them including: “President Morales, restore the morale, support your faculty now!”, “8 years with no pay increases + 8 … [Read more...] about Professors protest against low salaries

Prefering better bosses to better pay

November 9, 2012 by Archived posts

Money Hands

By, Julia Matulionis |Staff Writer| A statistical study has shown that workers would prefer better bosses over better pay. A staggering statistic was released last month after a survey of Americans was performed by workplace psychologist Michelle McQuaid who stated, “65 percent say a better boss would make them happy while 35 percent choose a pay raise.” The majority of employees surveyed stated they were unhappy with their bosses attitudes and ways of conducting business and prefer a better boss to better pay. Leaders in the workplace have a lot on their shoulders: managing a team, concerns over the bottom line, and worrying about their higher-ups. But does this amounting pressure … [Read more...] about Prefering better bosses to better pay

CFA should vote to authorize strike

April 21, 2012 by Archived posts

By Aunjolay Lambert |Staff Writer| Knowing that the strike is so close to becoming reality makes me feel uneasy, but I do think CSU faculty should vote to strike. The faculty and staff are the heart and soul of the CSU campuses and without them it would be next to impossible to run CSU universities. Why aren’t their needs being met? Increasing student fees, tuition and denying faculty members a pay raise while the CSU Chancellor is approved a salary “supplement” is not what most students and faculty members want to hear. The California Faculty Association (CFA) is the union that represents 24,000 CSU employees who will either approve or decline a sequence of strikes which could … [Read more...] about CFA should vote to authorize strike

CSU limits new president salaries to 110 percent of incumbent’ss

January 28, 2012 by Archived posts 2 Comments

By Melissa Benton |Staff Writer| Incoming presidents of CSU campuses will not receive a starting salary of 110 percent of that of the incumbent’s base pay, according to a CSU press release. The new policy, declared by the CSU Board of Trustees on Jan. 25, was first introduced from the Special Committee on Presidential Selection and Compensation which has been reviewing the system’s selection process and executive compensation structure. According to CSU board bhair Herbert Carter, the new policy will aid all presidential candidates, the public and others by maintaining presidential salaries at a reasonable level in the future. “Our continued goal is to recruit and compete for the best … [Read more...] about CSU limits new president salaries to 110 percent of incumbent’ss

CFA deserves raises

October 13, 2011 by Archived posts 284 Comments

By Nicole Maldonado |Staff Writer| All workers should be protected under unions. Unions that support the interest of workers are essential because they fight for the worker’s rights to fair wages, benefits, retirement, and against disparity of treatment. A current issue involves the California Faculty Association which has a contract with the CSU system. This contract was in effect from July 1, 2007 until July 30, 2010. The CFA put in proposals and negotiated for their contract raises because they did not receive contractual raises the last two years of service. According to Marcia Marx, who is president of the CFA on our campus, Chancellor Charles B. Reed, who is a part of the Board … [Read more...] about CFA deserves raises
