Women belong in the Resistance

January 26, 2017 by Brittanie Gutierrez 1 Comment

By Brittanie Gutierrez |Staff Writer| I have always been passionate about women's rights; I've always wanted to let people know that my rights were not for negotiation. I never imagined marching next to others with the same emotions, fears and hopes. So when Women's March Los Angeles was formulating, I knew I wanted to take part of it. Being a woman devastated and afraid of the future of my rights, I deemed it vital that I went to this march; it was not an option—I had to go. The morning of the march, I knew nothing but good things were going to happen. After the first stop on the Metrolink, I knew this movement was going to be big; the train had reached maximum capacity … [Read more...] about Women belong in the Resistance

Womens History Month

May 5, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Erendy Torres |Staff Writer| March is Women's History Month. It is the month in which we honor all the humanitarian and memorable women who have made a difference and fought for equal rights. Notable women who are often mentioned are Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and Susan B. Anthony, but all women are celebrated during this month.  More specifically, March 8 is the globally recognized "International Women's Day." "International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for celebrating accelerating gender parity," as stated on the website InternationalWomensDay.com. The … [Read more...] about Womens History Month

Immigrants shouldn’t be deemed “illegal”

May 17, 2015 by Kassandra Garcia Leave a Comment

By Kassandra Garcia |Staff Writer| “Illegal” immigration has been the defining characteristic since before our country began. So I cannot help but cringe whenever I hear anti-immigration protesters use “stop illegal alien invasion” and “make America, American again” as a means to get their point across.   In my opinion, this type of abrasive language contributes to the animosity towards immigrants which allows  these individuals to be dehumanized.   On top of that, it makes me question the logic behind anti-immigration supporters.   Have they forgotten that this country was established by immigrants and not once were they referred to as alien or … [Read more...] about Immigrants shouldn’t be deemed “illegal”

We should not respect everyone’s beliefs

December 13, 2014 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Daniel DeMarco |Copy Editor| Throughout my life, I’ve often heard people express some variation of: “Well, you’ve got to respect everyone’s beliefs/opinions.” I’m sure you reading this have also heard something like this in your life, at least once, and perhaps you may have even said it yourself. In reality, you do not need to respect everyone’s beliefs, nor should you. Statements advocating respect for everyone’s beliefs and opinions are a trick; they seem, at first, harmless―even worth supporting―because they adhere to respect and equality to others. It is a trick because beliefs, opinions, ideas―call them what you will―should have to earn their respect. Simply … [Read more...] about We should not respect everyone’s beliefs

“Bathrooms For All” event creates neutral place

November 22, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Aimee Villalpando |Staff Writer| Individuals of different sexes were able to use the same restroom in last week’s “Restrooms For All” event in the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU). From Nov. 17 to Nov. 21, the campus community had the option of using the gender-neutral restrooms. The Pride Center hosted the event in an effort to create spaces where people of all gender identities could access restrooms without the fear of gender policing or segregation. The purpose of the event was to help educate the campus about issues related to transgender and other non-binary gender communities. The Pride Center exposed common “myths” surrounding the issue, such as … [Read more...] about “Bathrooms For All” event creates neutral place

Feminism polls show mixed feelings

October 31, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Ivanna Carlos |Staff Writer| Not everyone knows what feminism is; each person may have a different definition of feminism. I introduced a survey of five questions to the campus, of which 38 females and 21 males participated. Do you think women should be paid the same amount as men for the same job? 38 females answered yes. 20 males answered yes, 1 male answered no. Do you think women should have the same rights as a man under the law? 38 females answered yes, 21 males answered yes. Do you know what feminism is? 36 females answered yes, 2 females answered no. 18 males answered yes, 3 males answered no. From the 59 students surveyed, we can determine that 97 … [Read more...] about Feminism polls show mixed feelings

Right to be forgotten list to remove people from search unrelated to public interest

October 25, 2014 by Jacob Collins Leave a Comment

By Jacob Collins |Staff Writer| A European court case may make a lasting impact on the internet by offering a way for individuals who have been unjustly accused or maligned to petition search engines to stop linking their name to disparaging material. The so-called “right to be forgotten” allows people to petition search engines like Google to remove links to articles online that are no longer considered relevant to that person’s current life. However, if a matter is still of public interest, the request may be denied. There have been strong reactions to the ruling on both sides. Eric Posner wrote in a Slate article, “The European “right to be forgotten” is the most important right … [Read more...] about Right to be forgotten list to remove people from search unrelated to public interest

Government interests change Internet privacy

October 23, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Alex Cardenas |Staff Writer| Recent cases of online censorship have demonstrated that people need to fight back against intrusive governments. An open Internet is necessary to allow a web where people can easily communicate information without third party interference, and keep governments and established businesses from using the Internet for their own interests. Since Oct. 10, the Venezuelan government has denied their citizens access to the Internet news site Infobae. The site was blocked after posting pictures of a deceased Venezuelan government official that was fatally stabbed. As a counter move, Infobae recently introduced a number of unblocked domains which would … [Read more...] about Government interests change Internet privacy

Same-sex couples finally receive common marriage rights

February 13, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Essence Dennis |Staff Writer| The Department of Justice is administering a new policy on Feb. 17, 2014 that deals with rightful benefits to married same-sex couples. This is a new form of instruction where their employees get equal protection for lawful same-sex marriage. This policy is going to put into effect the types of benefits that opposite-sex marriage people have already been receiving. For example, “An inmate in a same-sex marriage can be furloughed to be present during a crisis involving a spouse,” according to The Washington Post. The policy means that in every aspect the Department of Justice is connected to in the United States, they will be striving towards equality … [Read more...] about Same-sex couples finally receive common marriage rights

By Daniel DeMarco |Staff Writer| Oct 18: UN Security Council seat rejected by Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN security council and the country rejected the seat, according to Aljazeera.
