By Saeed Villanueva |Staff Writer| Hundreds were in attendance May 2 to watch Jane Elliot, creator of the famous blue eyes/brown eyes experiment, speak about the current state of racism in our country. The event took place inside the SMSU Event Center and was the third annual event at CSUSB featuring Elliot. The event was a huge success with approximately 700 people attending, of which an estimated 500 being students and faculty, and 200 were community members. The event was headed by the Institute for Child Development and Family Relations (ICDFR) by professors Mark D. Agars and Kelly Campbell, director and associate director of ICDFR. A Culture, Not A Costume

October 26, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Erica Wong |Copy Editor| Cultural appropriation is already a problem in fashion and pop culture at large. However, each year on Halloween, people find it acceptable to imitate and ridicule cultural symbols that aren’t theirs. Cultural appropriation happens when elements from a minority culture are copied by members of the dominant culture and used outside of their original cultural context – “sometimes even against the expressed, stated wishes of representatives of the originating culture,” according to Wikipedia. The term cultural appropriation is frequently confused with cultural assimilation. “Cultural assimilation is the process by which a person or a group’s language … [Read more...] about A Culture, Not A Costume

Rampant US Islamophobia must cease

June 7, 2015 by Kassandra Garcia Leave a Comment

By Kassandra Garcia |Staff Writer| Islamophobia in the United States has increased immensely and needs to be stopped.   For those who do not know what that term means, Islamophobia (or anti-Muslim sentiment) is an exaggerated fear, hatred and hostility toward Islam and Muslims.   “It is perpetuated by negative stereotypes resulting in bias, discrimination, and the marginalization and exclusion of Muslims from social, political, and civic life,” according to Gallup, a news source.   Some Americans are trying to justify their fear or hate toward Islam and Muslims by stating that the way they feel is justified because of what occurred during tragic events such … [Read more...] about Rampant US Islamophobia must cease

Hate crime shooting leaves three dead

April 26, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Chelsea Galvez |Staff Writer| A shooting that left three dead at two Jewish centers in Overland Park, Kansas, has caused many to reevaluate the realities of prejudice and racism in the United States. On Sunday, April 13, 2014, Frazier Glen Cross shot and killed Dr. William Lewis Corporon, 69, and his 14 year old grandson in the parking lot of the Kansas Jewish Community Center. Corporon and his grandson were on their way to a talent contest when Cross open fired on the two while yelling, “Heil Hitler,” said authorities. None of those killed were Jewish. Immediately after the attack, Police said Cross proceeded to the Village Shalom senior living facility, where he open … [Read more...] about Hate crime shooting leaves three dead

Atheists deserve tolerance, not hate

May 23, 2011 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Steve Avila |Staff Writer| Atheists are the most hated group in America, according to a study by the University of Minnesota. If so, this is a sad indictment of the so-called love of diversity in the United States. Minnesota’s study asked its subjects which group doesn’t agree with their vision of American society and which group they would discourage their children from marrying. Atheists made up nearly 40 percent of the first question and 47.6 percent of the second. It’s hard to believe that a society known for its diversity and its many different cultures has such an aversion to atheists because of their beliefs. What this study implies is that Americans are more … [Read more...] about Atheists deserve tolerance, not hate
