By Saeed Villanueva |Staff Writer| San Bernardino fights scarcity by concentrating on homelessness and providing food for lower income families, but the numbers show the city still has a long way to go in their efforts against poverty. San Bernardino has been through a lot since the city filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and has made gradual improvements to rebuild its economy each year. The county has made strides to improve its homeless situations by creating programs that find shelter for them. The Stepup program has found shelter for plenty of homeless people within the last year. “There are 131 individuals who are chronically homeless and we’ve managed to find shelter for 50 … [Read more...] about SB efforts against poverty

Ignore Bieber, focus on the real issues

November 16, 2012 by Archived posts

By Megan Davis |Staff Writer| Several big news stories broke out last week. The director of the Central Intelligence Agency David Petraeus has resigned following his affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell. Israel has opened fire onto Gaza according to CNN, releasing more than 115 rockets. Understandably these stories have fallen to the wayside for many, since the earth-shattering news of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez splitting up hit the airwaves and the Twitter feeds on Nov. 10. “Students on campus seem to have no idea what’s going on outside what’s happening in the pop culture world. So two kids broke up. Who cares? Please tell me why that matters,” said student Jessica … [Read more...] about Ignore Bieber, focus on the real issues

Jones plans on getting students more involved in any future activities produced by ASI by setting up meetings once a week and checking in with her fellow students as well as making decisions with their input in mind. “I want students to have a say in the motions that are passed instead of just passing something without their input. I want to work with them by giving them the clubs they want and work … [Read more...] about Michel’le Jones, ASI presidential candidate

A look into Black History in San Bernardino

February 17, 2012 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Jacqueline Scholten |Staff Writer| Black History month is a month of pride for San Bernardino as we celebrate one of our first African American settlers who gained freedom in California. Former slave Lizzy Flake Rowan played a major role in San Bernardino’s early history, according to San Bernardino’s Historical and Pioneer Society. In 1851, 26 black slaves left Salt Lake City, Utah and traveled to southern California to settle a new colony with 437 Mormons. The city they settled eventually became San Bernardino. All 26 of the slaves became free when they reached the California state line. "Some of them were a bit wary of this freedom, afraid that their new status on the … [Read more...] about A look into Black History in San Bernardino

Black Friday takes away from holidays

November 18, 2011 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

David Haines | Flickr

by Suanna Gutierrez | Staff Writer| Black Friday seems more reminiscent of the plague than the holiday season. The essential tools in preparation for the holidays seem to be a coffee in hand, coupons, ads, the family wish list and a prepared mentality to stand in line for hours. What happened to tree lighting, baking cookies and more importantly Thanksgiving? The essence of the holidays has significantly shifted from moments to presents. Black Friday isn’t solely responsible for the materialistic sentiments that have infiltrated the American celebration of the season, but it definitely seems to be a landmark product of our lost ways. The insanity that engulfs the inside of a store for … [Read more...] about Black Friday takes away from holidays
