The 2018 graduating class of Emerging Leaders held their completion ceremony at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa on May 11. Consisting of 14 students from College of the Desert and the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus, the eight-month Emerging Leaders program allowed them to tour local Coachella Valley businesses and practice professional skills necessary to assume leadership roles in the community. CSUSB celebrates Cinco de Mayo
For the first week of May, CSUSB held an assortment of activities to celebrate Cinco de Mayo across both campuses. Cinco de Mayo is a Latino holiday that commemorates the victory of the Mexican army during the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In San Bernardino, the Cross Cultural Center hosted four days of events to showcase the national heritage and importance of the holiday. A program called "The history that was banned" took place on May 1. This gave students the opportunity to view books and films that were banned under Bill 2281, which prohibited Latino education to be taught in Arizona schools before being overturned by Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotamayor. Palm Desert Campus Plants Community Garden
The arrival of spring allows for eager gardeners to put their green thumbs to work and grow an assortment of flowering plants. CSUSB's Palm Desert Campus (PDC) took advantage of the season's temperate weather with the creation of a community garden. As a partnership between the campus and the city of Palm Desert, PDC has access to a plot of land near the campus at University Park to grow organic vegetables and produce. The garden is maintained by the campus and the university also covers the cost for water and plants. This is the first year the garden has been in operation. The CSUSB Palm Desert campus welcomed its new associate dean, Michael Salvador, at the beginning of this fall quarter. Salvador was previously the chair of the communication studies department at the San Bernardino campus, but relocated to the Coachella Valley and continues to show his Coyote pride at Palm Desert's only four-year university. HEAL documentary premieres at Palm Desert Campus
On Nov. 16, the CSUSB Palm Desert campus hosted a free talk for students with Adam Schomer, award-winning producer of the documentary HEAL, which premiered at the Indian Wells Theater a day later. HEAL is a film directed by Kelly Noonan that focuses on by changing one’s thoughts, emotions, and perceptions, the human body can heal itself from any disease. Featuring the insight of scientists and teachers like Dr. Deepak Chopra, Dr. Joe Dispenza, Anita Moorjani, and Bruce Lipton, the documentary also follows real people on their healing journeys through the methods described. Palm Desert Campus Expands with New Radio Class
The CSUSB Palm Desert campus began offering its first radio production class this fall quarter as part of the ongoing goal to expand and diversify the programs offered to students. Maintaining their permanent satellite location since 2002, the campus serves as the only four-year institution in the Coachella Valley and the only university named in the state budget. This June, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a state budget granting the Palm Desert campus three million in one-time funds, making a total of 20 million for the institution to use for future development and to increase enrollment. Palm Desert Campus Hosts Escape Room Event

Teams consisting of up to five players will have a maximum of 45 minutes to unlock a cryptex, a portable vault device reminiscent to the one featured in The Da Vinci Code. The numbers needed to unlock the cryptex will be revealed once players solve various riddles and clues and find secret boxes and compartments within a room. The team that manages to open the cryptex in the shortest amount of time will win the Escape Room competition. Arabian Nights cast unites for 11th performance at Palm Desert campus

The set was decorated with several carpets covering the floor, jeweled pillows, treasure chests, twinkling lights resembling the night sky, and yellow curtains to create the Arabian theme. The play is about a young maiden, Scheherazade, who is forced into a marriage with the cruel ruler, Shahryar. The heartbroken Shahryar has been known to kill his brides in an act of revenge after marrying each wife. With a goal to “Connect, Contribute, Collaborate, and Communicate with the Community,” the club is striving to reach out and contribute to the surrounding community. Professor Basemeh Rihan at CSUSB, Club Advisor, started the Communication Club in efforts to give the students a club revolving around communication.
