They say educational institutions and universities are places where people can feel free to express themselves in order to create an environment where we can collectively grow and learn to form a better society. However, can students and faculty honestly say that this is the case? Do they feel safe enough and welcomed to express their opinion, regardless of which side they might fall on? In my experience, and from what I have witnessed others experience over the years in college, I would say this is most certainly not the case. Whether it's having your opinion mocked by the professor or having a hostile classroom environment where you know you aren't welcome, I think it is safe to say … [Read more...] about Opinion: Alleged suppression of student political opinions in the university

Three best local co-op games to play with one another
With many CSUSB students and their families staying indoors more, that means one thing: more time to spend together! Video games can bring us together in many ways, with online video games becoming more popular than ever before. Sometimes there's a special joy from playing an excellent local couch co-op game right beside your friends, family, significant other, or dog. These are three excellent games to enjoy with others! Fortnite Everyone has heard about this game at some point. Either from their family, their kids, significant others, friends, dogs, fish, or when shopping for merchandise. Did you know, though, that it now includes split-screen? Instead of telling people to get … [Read more...] about Three best local co-op games to play with one another
I Promise I’m Mexican
“Miralo, ella tiene un nopal en la frente…” This statement has followed me everywhere from supermarkets when I’m purchasing a copious amount of masa to my own place of employment when a customer asks where the nearest dressing room is. It translates to, “Look, she has a cactus on her forehead…” This statement essentially aims to describe Mexicans who waltz around with the intent of pretending that they aren’t Mexican. As a cactus on a forehead is obvious, the physical appearance of some Mexicans—such as skin tone or facial features—may be obvious at times too. Therefore, denying your ethnicity when it’s so apparent is as equivalent as strolling around with a cactus on one’s … [Read more...] about I Promise I’m Mexican
Children need positive influences
By Cherae Hunt |News Editor| I would always hear my grandma say “you kids don’t do anything anymore. All you do is sit in front of the television. Back in my day...” then I tune her out as she keeps talking. Now as an adult, I think, “does modern culture ruin childhood?” Looking at my little sister, who is now 13-years-old, and hearing all the pressures she goes through, of course modern culture can damage a childhood, but I would not say it ruins it. We live in a self-absorbed world where having the right selfie and being in a relationship seem more important than going to college. “I think there is a greater emphasis on the self nowadays, which I don’t think is necessarily … [Read more...] about Children need positive influences
The Bathroom Law Pt.2
By Kevin Miller |Coyote Contributor| It is astounding to have peers who believe the minority should shelve their desire for equality for the convenience of the majority when, not yet halfway through 2016, 11 transgender individuals have been murdered in the United States alone. 2015 saw the highest number of transgender murders in history, at 21, and the number is expected to reach a new high this year. In the post-Obergefell v. Hodges world, many politicians have had their ability to attack the rights of others limited by the scope of the ruling. To fill this void, they have turned to creating rhetoric regarding the chaos facing Americans if transgender individuals are allowed … [Read more...] about The Bathroom Law Pt.2
Are you ready for the “real world”?
By Israel Ramirez |Staff writer| Many students who obtain a degree do not necessarily know what to do with it. This can only mean they are not prepared for what we call the "real world." When I refer to the "real world," I am speaking about the job industry and what it will take for us to compete with others in order to land a job after graduation. As students, we must be prepared to perform to our full potential. "If I could go back and do something differently it would have to be networking with other individuals and attending school events in order to meet new faces who could later be an influence when attempting to obtain a job," said library service specialist Manuel Veron. Even … [Read more...] about Are you ready for the “real world”?
The Reality of Cloning
By Michael Isberto |Staff Writer| Growing up I told myself, if I won the lottery, I would use my winnings to try to make Jurassic Park a reality. The only problem, I’ve learned the cloning failure rate could be 999 to 1000. And, sometimes, the “failure” produces horrible suffering for creatures created through the cloning process. The good news is these deformed beings often die quickly. Some never manifest any symptoms of life at all. I learned this from an article published by The University of Utah. “Cloning animals through somatic cell nuclear transfer is simply inefficient,” stated The Genetic Science Learning Center at The University of Utah. “The success rate … [Read more...] about The Reality of Cloning
Mindfulness is a powerful tool
By Michael Isberto |Staff Writer| A course on mindfulness is one of the newest additions to CSUSB’s curriculum. The Communication Studies department dedicates an entire class on helping students strengthen their focus by helping them stay in the present. I believe this is great for students and it is a crucial skill to have for everything we do. “I’m interested in taking Mindfulness & Communication because it sounds rad,” said student Coleen Cabral. “I would like to learn how to be mindful and how to meditate and to live in the present moment. To distress from my other four classes I’m going to take. It’s a way to knock out an upper-division elective requirement without … [Read more...] about Mindfulness is a powerful tool
We need art
By Michael Isberto |Staff Writer| Art is essential to a well-rounded education, but for some reason, it’s always the first thing that general consumers and educators cut from their budgets when money is tight. The lack of funding for art programs has taken its toll on schools across the U.S., including one of the main art organizations in the West Coast. The Music Center in Los Angeles is one of the leading performing arts and music education centers in California. Their mission statement is “to make quality arts education part of the core curriculum for all schools in Los Angeles County," as well as "to establish The Music Center as a welcoming and inclusive venue for children, … [Read more...] about We need art
Studying abroad enriches student knowledge
By Serena Gomez |Staff Writer| If you want to visit an exotic place, experience different cultures, and receive college credit for it, go study abroad. At CSUSB there is an opportunity for students to study abroad in over 20 different countries. Take advantage of this opportunity to travel abroad by letting the world be your classroom. According to the Center for International Studies and Programs (CISP) website, “CSUSB hosts almost 1,000 international students from over 53 different countries.” Why aren’t more CSUSB students visiting other countries? Most people would say that it is because of financial situations. However, if you stopped going to Starbucks every morning … [Read more...] about Studying abroad enriches student knowledge
