By Olivia Ramsey There were tense moments on an Omnitrans bus in San Bernardino on Friday, January 27, when a shot was fired prompting an intense police response. The bus contained adults and children, and the incident led to one man being injured and another being arrested. San Bernardino Police responded to streets Base Line and E around 6 p.m. upon receiving the report of a man with a gun aboard an Omnitrans bus. Officers quickly arrived and cleared the bus. OmniTrans celebrates Transit Equity Day in San Bernardino County

Transit Equity Day provides a day off from paying public transit fares as well as giving incentive for those to explore new transportation options. “All five of San Bernardino County’s local bus systems participated in the free ride offer on February 4. Important topics presented at the council meeting were the city’s bankruptcy, Omnitrans, and San Bernardino’s new mayor. According to The Press Enterprise, “About a third of the route has bus-only lanes, and there will be an average of one stop every mile. That along with signals from the buses to turn traffic lights green, will cut travel time from Cal State to the VA hospital from 64 minutes on a regular bus to 39 minutes. Buses will pick up passengers at stations every 10 to 15 minutes.” The new sbX is intended to encourage residents and students to take the bus instead of drive. Accompanying these 14 newly modeled buses are 16 art-inspired stations. All buses include free WiFi and electrical outlets to charge your electronics on the go; also CSUSB’s participation in the “Go Smart” program allows enrolled students unlimited bus rides just by swiping their student ID. ASI helps funds free bus passes for CSUSB students

(ASI) will partner with the university in renewing the GoSmart program for the 2013-2014 school year so that CSUSB students will have access to unlimited bus rides on the Omnitrans. GoSmart, is a program offered through Omnitrans that provides participating schools, colleges, and universities in the San Bernardino Valley with limitless rides on Omnitrans buses. When I heard about this promotion I thought about how much money I would be saving on gas, and that $102 parking permit. I thought about all the free time I’d have on the bus, finishing some reading or schoolwork and all that fun stuff. All of this for free all year long? You can’t beat that, right? Omnitrans already offered pretty great rates for students ($35 for a 31-day pass) but in reality I never really considered riding the bus until it was free.
