2020 experiences high turnout of young voters

November 11, 2020 by Alyssa Beck 1 Comment

Generation Z and millennial voters showed up in high numbers all across the country for the 2020 presidential election. According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), a majority of young People of Color (POC) showed support for Joe Biden. CIRCLE's data indicates the percentage of POC, ranging from ages 18-29, based on their race and preferred presidential candidate. Rose Sesma, a volunteer poll worker in San Bernardino County, said, "I felt so proud to see so many young people show up to cast their votes early. There's a lot of them and that means they're able to make a real difference." Researchers from Campus Vote Project and … [Read more...] about 2020 experiences high turnout of young voters

Instagram Fame: Behind the Posts

March 6, 2019 by Ashley Balmaceda Leave a Comment

Millions of us wake up every day, grab our phone and check Instagram. We scroll, like posts, follow someone here and there and go about our day. But how would our relationship with Instagram be if we had 61,000 people watching our every post? Is social media fame as glamorous as it looks? This is what 19-year-old Valentina Carrick deals with. Carrick (@chovvder) arose to Instagram fame two years ago, and now has over 61,000 followers on the platform. https://www.instagram.com/p/BtFgN8mA1kl/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link Being a social media influencer is something many people strive to be, but for Carrick it came out of nowhere. “It’s been about two years when I would refresh my … [Read more...] about Instagram Fame: Behind the Posts

Keep calm and carry on

June 9, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Kyle Richardson |Staff Writer| Is it just me or has everyone been a little too sensitive lately? Most college students are considered Millennials or Generation Y. We get this title because we were born between the late 1980s and early 2000s. Our generation is the upcoming generation in line to run the world as we are graduating college, finishing grad school, starting families, and infiltrating top tier companies. The biggest problem with it all is that most people of our generation, who we look to lead our country, are a big group of sensitive children. Social media shares the blame. We are all connected to each other, as our voiced opinions on certain subjects spread like … [Read more...] about Keep calm and carry on

Disconnected millennials

June 9, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Destiny Guzman |Staff Writer| Millennials are intelligent, innovative and have many other great qualities! We have to say that, right? I mean, it is our generation! However, there are some things that are shameful for our generation that we have to admit. "I think as millennials we forget the importance of real human connection because of how simple it is to use technology to communicate," said student Nicole Gomez. Our generation thinks that it is easy to navigate through technology but what about the generation before us? We have to be able to realize that the baby boomers have tried to use technology but are not willing to use it because it is foreign to them. We forget about … [Read more...] about Disconnected millennials

What feminism really means

April 25, 2016 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Shirleena Racine Baggett |Staff Writer| I am a feminist. By making this declaration, I am saying that I believe and stand for the equal rights and representation for all, especially women. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, feminism is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities; it is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. "Everyone benefits from feminism. We all have an obligation as human beings on this planet to advocate for equality," said Coordinator of the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) Janet Honn-Alex. Feminism—its movement, its culture, and its definition has evolved over time. In our society, feminism … [Read more...] about What feminism really means

Millennials need more motivation

March 1, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Serena Gomez |Staff Writer| Millennials: the egotistical generation that lives off technology and are content with it. “[...] Sometimes called Generation Y. Because of their dependence on technology, they are said to be entitled and narcissistic,” stated KPCC's Evie Liu. Most of the other generations will look at millennials as the diverse, narcissistic, ignorant generation. However, their way of living is understandable, as they constantly try to keep up with the latest technology to stay in touch with peers. Millennials want social changes like gay rights, immigration, and equality, but no one is willing to actually do anything because they are content with how easy life … [Read more...] about Millennials need more motivation

Millennial Struggles

February 9, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

Maria de Lourdes Campos |Staff Writer| In today’s society there may be young adults whose lives have taken an unexpected turn. Things like children, living expenses, and education take a toll on them, both physically and mentally because there’s that daunting feeling of what if, what if I can’t do this? What if I bite off more than I can chew? The reality is that many young adults feel this sense of ineptness because they have goals and stressors pulling them in different directions, while trying to be active members of society. Eventually these stressors take a toll on them emotionally, physically, and mentally. As a result, many young adults find themselves living with their … [Read more...] about Millennial Struggles

Millennials deal with harsh criticism

November 26, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Ariana Cano |Staff Writer| Our generation has its fair share of slackers and innovators and it is important for individuals who criticize our millennials to understand this. Generation Y, also known as millennials, are individuals who were born in the years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s, which is a big gap that includes people between the ages of 11 to 32. Although, millennials constitute a wide age range, some people tend to focus on adolescents and young adults. These adolescents and young adults are frequently labeled as lazy, narcissistic, and dumb by authors like Mark Bauerlein in, “The Dumbest Generation” and Jean M. Twenge in “Generation Me,” as well … [Read more...] about Millennials deal with harsh criticism
