The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians bring Pow Wow to CSUSB
By Mary Moreno |Staff Writer| The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and CSUSB students were brought together on the weekend of Oct. 11 in celebration of the 18th annual San Manuel Pow Wow. CSUSB has had the privilege of holding the three day event on campus since 2001. Over a quarter of a million dollars in prizes were distributed amongst the different competitions and the participants ranged from ages 2 to 90. Native Americans from across North America gathered to celebrate and compete in different categories of song and dance. Some traveled from Canada and Alaska. Feminist Rory Dicker visits CSUSB
By Marlyn Rodriguez |Staff Writer| Rory Dicker, a professor at Vanderbilt University and author of "A History of U.S. Feminisms" made a visit to CSUSB on May 17 to speak to students about feminism. The lecture was held in the San Manuel Student Union Event Center. Professor Janet Kottke introduced the keynote speaker by asking the audience, “If we do not need a wave of feminism now, when?” It was then that CSUSB students and staff gave a warm Coyote welcome to Rory Dicker. Dicker, a highly proclaimed feminist, started her lecture by asking what were some stereotypes of a feminist. Burlesque workshop sassifies students

The Women’s Resource Center in the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) held a workshop on May 7 that taught students the history and evolution of burlesque dancing as well as choreography typically found in modern performances. “I’ve always liked burlesque. I’ve seen it on TV and I just love the costumes, so joining my friend was fun even though I wasn’t that good at the moves,” said student Carolina Mejia. CSUSB’s Women Resource Center (WRC) has brought the play “We Did It For You: Women’s Journey Through History” written by Thea Iberal, to our campus. By Tom Stillwagon |Staff Writer| James Ramos, Chairman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, visited CSUSB last week to speak to a class of approximately 200 students about his work with the San Manuel tribe and addressing misconceptions Californians have about the Native American people. The speech was given to Professor James Fenelon’s Race & Racism class on Jan. 26. Ramos, a Serrano Indian, performed a pair of traditional songs, singing and playing a large rattle made out a gourd to open his speech. CSUSB’s best billiard players to compete in Las Vegas
By Tom Stillwagon |Staff Writer| CSUSB is giving students a chance to show off their billiard skills with a nine-ball tournament, and the winners will be headed to compete in Las Vegas. The Santos Manuel Student Union Gamers Lounge hosts the tournament in partnership with CSUSB’s Women’s Resource Center. The men's portion of the tournament took place Jan. 18 in the Gamers Lounge. The winners were Tai Au and Tuan Hyunh. The women’s tournament will take place Jan. 20, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Gamers Lounge. The top two men and the top two women will advance to the next round, which will take place in Las Vegas on Feb. 3 and 4.
