Activism solves some social issues, not all
By Cherae Hunt | Asst. News Editor | I think that activism and protesting does cause social change as long as the cause is absent of violence. As of June 26, The LGBT community has the right to be married legally in the United States. There have been protests for gay rights since 1924 with “the earliest gay rights organization The Society of Human rights in Chicago,” according to infoplease.com For 89 years the LGBT community has been fighting for the same rights as any heterosexual couple. New York City’s Stonewall Inn police raid in 1969 was probably one of the most influential gay rights protests in history. RFRA is a discriminatory act
By Kassandra Garcia |Staff Writer| The state of Indiana has been faced with national criticism due to their implementation of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). In my opinion, the act creates a huge set back in equality because it allows people to justify discriminatory acts as religious choice, but is plain bigotry. When I first heard about the RFRA being enacted, I thought it was a joke. How is it still possible to allow this type of backwards thinking? This law offers no protection for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) community because it allows the possibility of discrimination. Indiana’s Legislature and Governor Michael Pence put … [Read more...] about RFRA is a discriminatory act

By Nadia Ahmad |Staff Writer| Q-Fest, hosted by the SMSU Pride Center, filled the Events Center with a mix of music, crafts, and vendors on Oct. 24. The Pride Center’s goal is to provide a safe and comforting environment for students of all genders and sexualities. Q-Fest did just that. The Pride Center lured everyone to the events center with free pizza and live bands. Wasi, a trio from Orange County, was the first band to perform and in my opinion, did an amazing job adding volume and energy to the room. The band started out as background music for the students as they floated from vendor to vendor but after the first two songs, everyone crowded together in front of the … [Read more...] about Q-Fest shines with pride
