The Korean Culture

May 15, 2019 by Yesica Gonzalez Leave a Comment

By the desire of students to expand the Korean culture, a whole day was made dedicated to it. The Korean Festival first took place in 2015, followed by a surprise for Bomi Hwang, CSUSB’s Korean professor, that the festival continued annually. For Hwang and her students, it became a big project while they all got to know each other during the process. "When we started, we had meetings every other week for four months, including dress rehearsals, driving to Los Angeles to get the Korean costumes. Korean culture is a way to bind us together. I'm so grateful that I'm able to work with the students here," shared Hwang. The festival usually consists of some kind of visual display, … [Read more...] about The Korean Culture

Communication differences

February 27, 2017 by Yena Hong Leave a Comment

By Yena Hong |Staff Writer| Communication is one of the biggest problems that many Korean students currently face here at CSUSB. Through verbal and nonverbal communication, Korean students find it difficult to adjust to the American culture, and may experience culture shock. One Korean student, Sohyeon Hong, says that the biggest part of culture shock is verbal communication. She explained that she gets confused with slang language in American culture. "One of my group members said 'I am down' in the class discussion," said Hong. "I've never heard this expression before, so I guessed she didn't agree with my opinion [...] Because 'down' sounds negative for me, but it means … [Read more...] about Communication differences

Comic culture

March 7, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Jaeyeon Kim |Staff Writer| Comic books have been produced by lots of comic book companies, such as DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, as well as many others. Comics have affected cultures in many ways for a long time. One of the affected cultures is the movie industry. Many movies have been produced based on comic books, such as Batman and Superman. “Batman and Superman have infiltrated every major form of entertainment in America, except for the music industry,” according to Teen Ink. Like Batman and Superman, America has many superhero movies, such as those featuring Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Avengers. As these superhero comic books and movies have become … [Read more...] about Comic culture

Silverwood Restaurant Sushi and Grill–Restuarant Review

April 25, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Woojung Choi |Staff Writer| Silverwood Restaurant Sushi and Grill provides several kinds of Korean traditional dishes and sushi, which have good quality and natural flavor. It is located at 13910 Hwy 138, Hesperia, CA, 92345. The restaurant is famous for preparing dishes from home raised ducks, pigs, and chickens. All the food on the menu is grown by the farm behind the restaurant. When I walked into the restaurant, the first, savory smell was very good and made me hungrier. The interior of the restaurant is both Korean and Japanese-style. One side was a modern Korean-style with high-key lighting and pictures of Korean food decorated the wall. My first impression about … [Read more...] about Silverwood Restaurant Sushi and Grill–Restuarant Review

Coyotes’ favorite “must watch” shows

October 11, 2013 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Mary Moreno |Staff Writer| Television enthusiasts rejoice over the ability to stream their shows from network websites, Netflix and YouTube. A recent study by Neilson Research found that 37 percent of U.S. households watch television online That can explain the spontaneous gasps or laughs coming from all those students during their break in between classes. “I mostly watch Korean dramas online,” said Vanessa Robles “My favorite show is Coffee Prince, it was my very first Korean drama and is amazing. The whole plot line, everything just pulls you into the story and you begin to feel what the characters feel.” Chris Burns has been interested in two new shows released … [Read more...] about Coyotes’ favorite “must watch” shows

SLIP into a new world this summer

May 10, 2013 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Phil Ruddle | Staff Writer| Dany Doueiri talks quickly, he moves all over the place, he’s always in and out of his office, he is a man in constant movement, but he is always helping students. They line up outside his door patiently waiting for their turn to speak to him. Never had I met a man with such aptitude and energy to help students outside his office hours. It all made sense to me once I discovered he was one of the original founders of Summer Language Intensive Programs (SLIP) offered during the summer at CSUSB, which will be entering its seventh year. “We are the most affordable and one of the most rigorous summer language intensive residential programs in the nation,” … [Read more...] about SLIP into a new world this summer

CSUSB exchange students host Korean Culture Night

February 27, 2013 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Jounghun Kim |Staff Writer| Learning about different cultures every now and then is quite interesting for students. Korean Culture Night was hosted by students in the Asian Studies and Language Exchange Club. The event focused on South Korean culture, and traditional Korean food, like Bibimbab, was provided at the event. The Bibimbab is made from cooked rice mixed with many vegetables and gochu-jang, a red hot pepper paste. The president of the club, Russell Morgan tasted it and said, “It is really hot, really, really hot,” as he turned bright red. I really enjoyed this event because it was a good reminder of my life in Korea. I was able to eat foods that I am not able … [Read more...] about CSUSB exchange students host Korean Culture Night
