By Alexis De La Cruz |Staff Writer| This year was just one of many great seasons for Coyote volleyball. The sport that has been a part of our school since 1984 and has had a long history of ups and downs. The history of this program is unique compared to others at CSUSB because there have only been two coaches throughout the 33 years the team has been around. The first coach to lead the Coyotes in the NCAA Division III was Naomi Ruderman, who led the team to a 9-4 overall season record in her first year. Ruderman’s best season saw the Coyotes finish with a record of 36-8 overall. During her six years as head coach, the team made five NCAA West Regional … [Read more...] about History of Coyote volleyball

The win against Central Washington University in the NCAA West Regional was Cherniss' 600th with the Coyotes. To celebrate such a historic moment, the Coyote Athletics Department hosted an event featuring a legacy video and an award presentation. Current and former team members attended the event along with coaches from other Coyote sports teams, the vice president of Student Affairs, Athletic Department employees and former university president Albert Karnig. Coach Spotlight on Kim Cherniss
By Gregory Gammill |Staff Writer| The woman's volleyball team looks to make it back to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament under the instruction of veteran head coach Kim Cherniss. Cherniss has been the main person in charge of the volleyball team for the past 25 years and is entering her 26th year. She took over the program in 1991 and eventually brought the Coyotes back to their winning ways. Things got off to a slow start for her, but quickly picked up in 1997 when she turned the team around from a 13-15 record in 1996 to a 20-11 record in 1997. Players came and went over the years for her and the Coyotes, allowing her to move people around and … [Read more...] about Coach Spotlight on Kim Cherniss
Coyote volleyball takes Pioneers off the net
By Richard Burrud | Staff Writer | Coyote Women’s Volleyball team is still undefeated in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a 9-0 record coming into Saturday’s game against CSU East Bay who is 2-7 in Conference play. The Coyotes and Pioneers played three sets; the Coyotes were too much to handle for the Pioneers winning all three sets. Player of the Week Tori May and sophomore Brenna McIntosh were the standout Coyotes who led the game with 27 combined kills against the Pioneers. The night began with a kill by Alexandra Torline, and May was able to make a kill bringing the game tied to 12. Outside hitter Kaitlyn Christner made a big time solo block to … [Read more...] about Coyote volleyball takes Pioneers off the net
Volleyball continues their undefeated streak against CSU Stanislaus
By Michael Sessions |Staff Writer| When it comes to Cal State Stanislaus, the only word the Coyotes understand is WIN. Cal State San Bernardino has once again come out on top, making them 25-0 against the Warriors dating all the way back to 2001. The 3-1 win has also stretched their current undefeated streak in the CCAA to five. It was by no means an easy win however. The Coyotes had to travel north to the city of Turlock, an unfamiliar territory and surroundings to pull it off. It was home sweet home to one player though. Reminiscent of when she was team captain and took her high school team to the conference title, Pittman High alumni Ashley Solis aimed to elevate her game even … [Read more...] about Volleyball continues their undefeated streak against CSU Stanislaus
Women’s volleyball defeats rival CSULA
By Devan Lee |Staff Writer| CSUSB women’s volleyball comes out on top of their conference after they shut out rival school Cal State Los Angeles, Saturday Oct. 20. The victory marked the team’s third win in a row after they faced a bitter defeat against Cal State East Bay a week earlier that ended their eight game winning streak. After such a disappointing loss, head coach Kim Cherniss and her staff devised multiple strategies to bounce back and inevitably gain a winning edge in their upcoming games. Cherniss believes having to work around the team’s youth and inexperience has become one of the main obstacles the Coyotes have faced this season. “We really try to play well in … [Read more...] about Women’s volleyball defeats rival CSULA
Women’s volleyball looks to maintain first place status
By Megan Acuna |Staff Writer| Our Coyote volleyball team landed first place in their conference after they ended the first half of CCAA play despite their weekend loss to Cal State East Bay and comeback win against Cal State Monterey Bay Oct. 12 and Oct. 13. After an eight game winning streak, the Lady Yotes gave up a win at home in the Coussoulis Arena in an intense game against Cal State East Bay that went all the way to the fifth set. Head Coach Kim Cherniss believes this loss hasn't affected the team's momentum. "It was a wake up call and a learning experience. The girls took the loss to heart and the intensity during practice is very high," said Cherniss. The Coyotes had … [Read more...] about Women’s volleyball looks to maintain first place status
Cherniss looks to continue winning tradition
By Ryan Libby |Staff Writer| Woman’s Volleyball Coach Kim Cherniss has built a dynasty here at CSUSB. Now in her 22nd year, Cherniss continues to recruit dynamic players in an effort to put together a perfect team. “We want dynamic athleticism,” said Cherniss. “Be exceptional in some regard whether it’s your jumping ability, your speed, your height, your volleyball IQ, your execution level, your experience level, be dynamic in some regard because then if you find enough of those pieces then you can put together a puzzle that has championship qualities.” It’s safe to say that the “puzzle” is slowly coming together this year. Entering this season, Cherniss has gone 123-10 since … [Read more...] about Cherniss looks to continue winning tradition
“In God We Trust:” a motto and an attitude
By Suanna Gutierrez |Staff Writer| The House of Representatives passed a bill last week to reaffirm the nation’s motto as the phrase “In God We Trust.” While this sparks many topics to debate, it is a bill that I can support through the constant downpour of issues that seem to overwhelmingly divide us as a nation. All religious, spiritual, ethical or semantic contention aside, it is an important phrase to instill as our nations motto. It is a moral identity that should be important to all of us as Americans to protect. The phrase “In God We Trust,” to me, is a part of the timeless and revolutionary structure of America. Many nations establish a state supported religion. In addition to … [Read more...] about “In God We Trust:” a motto and an attitude
