Bill would integrate students onto Board of Trustees
By Katherine Valadez |Staff Writer| Students who are tired of rising tuition may soon have the opportunity to have more of their voices heard on the Board of Trustees that oversees the 23-campus CSU system. Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco/San Mateo, announced a bill on Feb. 15 that would diversify the CSU Board of Trustees. Arizona bans ethnic studies programs in schools

Under a new law, schools across the state are prohibited from offering ethnic studies classes or face having state funds withheld from them each month if they continue to offer classes. Already having been under scrutiny for its controversial Senate Bill 1070, which many felt discriminated against Latinos, the state is now being criticized again for its passage of Arizona House Bill 2281 which took effect in January. Kappa Delta host run to benefit children
By Katherine Valadez |Staff Writer| Child abuse victims across America will benefit from over $12,000 raised right here at CSUSB, if a few Coyotes have their way. The Kappa Delta Sorority will hold a 5K run at CSUSB March 10 to raise money for the charities Prevent Child Abuse America and ChildHelp. Last year $12,000 was raised and the sorority plans to raise more money for this year. The funds will go to prevent child abuse and help victims of abuse. The Shamrock 5K Run/Walk 2012 is the last event held during "Shamrock Week," which includes a basketball tournament in the Recreational Center. CSUSB sees spike in international student population
By Katherine Valadez |Staff Writer| The number of international students attending CSUSB has been increasing, according to the Center for International Studies and Programs (CISP). Currently, the CISP office estimates there are upwards of 650 international students on campus. This figure excludes students in the College of Extended Learning, which is a separate program. “There has definitely been an increase in international students at CSUSB,” said Rika Dawson, an administrative assistant for CISP. Gov. Brown proposes stricter requirements for Cal Grants
By Katherine Valadez |Staff Writer| Fewer Cal Grants may be given out if changes proposed by California Governor Jerry Brown in the grade point average requirements for the awards are finalized. In his proposed 2012-2013 budget, the minimum grade point average requirement for Cal Grant A would increase from 3.0 to 3.25. “Cal Grant “A” currently covers tuition up to $5,472 at Cal State universities, up to $12,192 at the University of California and up to $9,708 toward tuition and fees at private colleges,” reported the L.A. Jack Brown donates $100,000 to scholarship fund
By KatherineValadez |Staff Writer| Jack H. Brown, chairman of Stater Bros. markets, donated over $100,000 to CSUSB for the university’s Rose Brown Scholarship fund. The scholarship was established in 2000 by Jack Brown as a tribute to his mother, Rose Brown on her 80th birthday. “He admired her for being widowed at a very young age, and she never remarried while she was raising her son,” said Carmen Murillo-Moyeda, a public affairs marketing specialist for CSUSB. Jack Brown, for whom Jack Brown Hall is named, created the scholarship to help widowed and single parents, according to Murillo-Moyeda. Doctoral program hosts info-sessions
By Katherine Valadez |Staff Writer| The first and only doctorate program at CSUSB will host a series of information sessions in January and February at both the main campus and in Palm Desert. “CSUSB has been chosen has one of the first state universities in California to offer the Doctor of Education Degree in Educational Leadership,” according to the College of Education’s website. Information sessions at the main campus will be held on Jan. 25 and Feb. 29 in the atrium of the College of Education building.
