Music aficionados grab a cup of joe
By Jose Alvarez | Staff Writer | Augie’s Coffee House, located on 5th Street in Redlands, provides a warm family atmosphere with music, coffee, friends and events. There are many events at Augie’s throughout the year, such as “Art in the Alleyway”, which according to the manager, Blair Smith, happens quarterly. This is where they set up paintings and other forms of art in the alleyway next to the coffee shop. I originally went to Augie’s for “Jazz Night”, but I was disappointed when I found out that they no longer host it. In its place is another event called “Open Mic.” “Open Mic” is a small event that takes place once a week, every Tuesday, at around 6:30 p.m. It is in the … [Read more...] about Music aficionados grab a cup of joe
Black history is American history
By Selina Cerda |Staff Writer| American culture would not be what it is today without the revolutionary contributions made by African-Americans in the areas of art, music and literature. In this day and age, slavery, and the Civil Rights Movement remain very relevant topics. However, there are many famous African-American musicians, artists, and authors who aren’t discussed as much in classrooms or covered in the media. Jazz, a purely American genre, has roots in African-American communities; they are credited with the invention of the drum set. In 1927, scatting—vocal improvisation with wordless vowels—became a big hit when Louis Armstrong’s music took off. It is unknown … [Read more...] about Black history is American history
Coyotes Bop n’ Hop to the thythm of jazz
By Emmanuel Gutierrez |Asst. Features Editor| The Coyote Bop n’ Hop Swing Dance rocked my black, linty socks off. Prior to the concert, audience members were guided through an East Coast style swing dance by a CSUSB faculty member. I politely declined; I only know how to dance ironically. The moody blue foreground lighting juxtaposed the eerie, sangria-colored background—its warmth seeped through, advancing as the coolness receded. The jazz band created a sophisticated kind of cool ambiance, backed up against tall, sable curtains of matte cloth. There was the punchy, thundering brass section; smooth, virile sax septet; duel electric guitar and keyboard players; thumping, … [Read more...] about Coyotes Bop n’ Hop to the thythm of jazz

There was a variety of local artists that were showcasing and selling their art to the public. Artist Jared Tumbarello drew the crowd in with his interesting use of spray paint. (A&E) Latin Jazz Night!
By Joel Hanke |Staff Writer| Specific tracks played by CSUSB's Jazz ensemble resembled a classic James Bond film during a fast action chase scene, exciting and riveting. Other songs were very smooth and soothing, then sudden bursts of absurdity. CSUSB’s Santos Manuel Student Union hosted "Caliente! Salsa & Latin Jazz Night" Feb.11, bringing a spicy taste of Latin culture for students and San Bernardino residents alike. Prior to the actual Latin Jazz Ensemble performance was a dance class lead by voluntary instructor Robyn Fernandez who teaches free salsa and swing classes every quarter at CSUSB. The instructional dance course had a total of nine partner groups. Fernandez … [Read more...] about (A&E) Latin Jazz Night!

By Carly Woolley |Staff Writer| The University Dance Company (UDC) presented their annual showcase “For the Love of Dance” on Feb. 13.
