By Jazmin Jett |Staff Writer| Social stigmas are defined as the strong disapproval possessed by a society, regarding an individual’s traits or beliefs that are against the widely accepted social norm. Many are often stigmatized before they even get the chance to open their mouths and speak. For example: the transgendered student that sits behind you in lecture; the women in hijabs that you unnecessarily feel threatened by; even the student in the motor-scooter that you failed to say “excuse me” to this morning. All of the latter are often stigmatized. Would social stigmas be as prevalent if less people did what was expected as opposed to doing what’s best for them? Let’s … [Read more...] about Social stigmas can have serious repercussions
By Jazmin Jett |Staff Writer| Am I the only person who feels there is an abusive relationship with Walmart? The traffic is bad and the lines always look like people are thinking “who did it and where can I find them?” As for the the employees, were any of you aware that Walmart employees make $11/hr and can get up to thirty-nine hours a week? Before you say lucky them, consider the fact that they’re not paid for overtime. Due to the simple fact that Walmart is aware that exceeding thirty-nine hours a week would justify them as full-time employees, in turn making them eligible for benefits that Walmart refuse to give them. Such pay also places Walmart’s employees below the … [Read more...] about Walmart is public enemy number one
By Jazmin Jett |Staff Writer| On a scale of one to offensive, how much do the tattoos that actors and actresses adorn actually matter, in regards to the characters they play? According to the opinions of the media and viewers alike, they matter a lot. CSUSB student Mackenzie Viera said, “No one should be penalized for their being unique; especially actors and actresses. They should be judged by their talent”. For the most part, the characters that actors and actresses immerse themselves in are shy of tattoos. They’re usually left to exude the depth of their character throughout the film, as opposed to relying on aesthetics. I’ve always had several anecdotes as to why actors … [Read more...] about Actors should not be punished for having tattoos
By Jazmin Jett |Staff Writer| As students, we enter college with an ideal experience in mind and are often disappointed that attending school slowly but surely becomes a mechanical attempt at a degree. Our only relief is found in our friends, extra-curricular activities, memories created and most importantly our professors. I personally enjoy learning. I wouldn’t be consciously putting myself in debt if I didn’t. I find it refreshing to first walk into a class and be greeted by a professor with at least a sense of humor. It not only makes taking the class more enjoyable but in turn makes the subject matter that much more retainable. Aside from a welcoming … [Read more...] about What makes a good professor?

As juvenile as it sounds, I haven’t placed much significance on television since “The Rugrats” became “All Grown Up.” Besides the news, which I feel filters a particular set of information for public consumption, what could I possibly learn from watching a substantial amount of television? Maybe watching “True Blood” can assist in my communication with vampires on the daily basis. If I’m lucky, Kim Kardashian can provide insight if I ever decide to trick a guy into liking me. When taking a look … [Read more...] about Youth of America dependent on television
By Jazmin Jett |Staff Writer| I’ve always found it mind-boggling how easily influenced human beings are. Even the slightest hint of majority rule and the scale tips towards the new fad. I find it even more perplexing that thinking for yourself and marching to the beat of your own drum has transcended from being what was once ridiculed, to what is now “hip”. Peers of mine have even gone as far as misappropriating themselves as ‘weird’ or ‘anti-social’ in order to set themselves apart from everyone else. If one were to take the time for introspection and grasp the essence of their being they’d see that they are in fact, naturally different. According to Dictionary.com, pop culture is … [Read more...] about Just Be Yourself
