By Janet Curiel |Staff Writer| “Bernie! Bernie! Not me, us!” echoed from over 5200 supporters at the National Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino on May 24.   Democratic presidential nominee, Senator Bernie Sanders visited Riverside earlier that day as part of a string of rallies across the state in an attempt to capture California voters and delegates for the June 7 primary.   An ethnically diverse group of attendees, young and old, children and college-aged students lined the outdoor walkways for their chance to listen to Sanders message.   While waiting, many were greeted by avid Sanders volunteers, and an appearance by political hopeful Steve Stokes, … [Read more...] about Bern.I.E.dino

May 12, 2016 by Janet Curiel Leave a Comment

By Janet Curiel |Staff Writer| Students were feeling the “bern” at the “Bernstorm” event in the SMSU on May 4, hosted by Students for Bernie Sanders Club.   The club, which has gained roughly 200 members since February, had over 20 people attend the event.   With attendees ranging from students to local residents, plans of how to get students involved on the campaign trail with topics such as phone banking, canvassing, flyers and voter registration were discussed.   “CSUSB needed leadership to step up, so myself and other officers decided to start organizing and the club took off from there. We’re all activists, so staying quiet was not an option,” said Vice … [Read more...] about Bernie Sanders club

Seminar increases suicide awareness

May 12, 2016 by Janet Curiel Leave a Comment

By Janet Curiel |Staff Writer| Kevin Hines stood and took a long pause as if frozen in time on the SMSU stage and followed the stillness with three words: “Are you ok?”   That was all he needed to hear in the 40 minutes he paced the Golden Gate Bridge on the day he jumped. He became 1 of 34, less than 1%, to survive the fall that over 2000 didn’t.   Hines, an award-winning global speaker, bestselling author, documentary filmmaker, suicide prevention and mental health advocate, gripped his audiences with the account of his unlikely survival.   Hines was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 19 and continues with the daily struggle of his brain … [Read more...] about Seminar increases suicide awareness

Pressure grows as finals approach

June 3, 2012 by Archived posts

By Kim Dailey |Staff Writer| Get your note cards and highlighters out, finals week is just around the corner. Students have all different methods to prepare for their finals. Some choose to stay organized and take one task at a time. But others choose not to study and procrastinate by pulling all-nighters. Some use note-cards, highlighters, energy drinks, music, recorders, Powerpoints, lectures, books and memory to prepare for and pass their finals. Kristy Spinney said she is, “trying to finish papers and projects early, so I can begin studying. I also tape important passages to my register at work, so I will read them over and over to help me remember.” Julia Matulionis’ method … [Read more...] about Pressure grows as finals approach

May 23, 2012 by Archived posts

By Marlyn Rodriguez |Staff Writer| Rory Dicker, a professor at Vanderbilt University and author of "A History of U.S. Feminisms" made a visit to CSUSB on May 17 to speak to students about feminism. The lecture was held in the San Manuel Student Union Event Center. Professor Janet Kottke introduced the keynote speaker by asking the audience, “If we do not need a wave of feminism now, when?” It was then that CSUSB students and staff gave a warm Coyote welcome to Rory Dicker. Dicker, a highly proclaimed feminist, started her lecture by asking what were some stereotypes of a feminist. They included, “ugly, hairy, man-hating, butch, angry, hostile, militant.” She moved on from … [Read more...] about Feminist Rory Dicker visits CSUSB
