October 27, 2020 by Eddie Lopez 746 Comments

The CSU Entertainment Alliance held a virtual event teaching students about how to get hired during this pandemic. Five speakers from the entertainment industry spoke during the event, discussing a variety of topics. When the topic of resumés and cover letters was brought up, Shari Holly, host of the seminar and Director of Operations for CSU, explained that jotting down all the jobs one has can potentially hurt the applicants chances. Holly said, “When you are putting down the list of jobs you had on your resumé, quality vs quantity can do more harm than good." Knowing how to put down certain important information on a resumé was also discussed during the seminar. Karla Merala, a … [Read more...] about Talent recruiters discuss employment opportunities during COVID-19

Considering No Confidence: Karen Kolenheiman, Faculty Senate Chair

May 29, 2017 by Arturo Brooks 191 Comments

By Janet Curiel & Arturo Brooks |Staff Writers| Q. Why does the Faculty Senate feel there isn't shared governance? A. Shared governance is a hallmark of university life. It is how ideas are vetted and policies and plans are put through the grist of collective consideration. The Senate and its committees are the bodies that do this work and ensure that the faculty perspective is represented. It is incumbent upon administration to consult these bodies as a normal part of the business of the university.Since President Morales’ arrival on campus, shared governance has eroded. Major decisions affecting the university have been made with little or no attempt to solicit faculty input. The … [Read more...] about Considering No Confidence: Karen Kolenheiman, Faculty Senate Chair

Student Perspectives on the Presidential Election

October 8, 2016 by Hairuo Yi 2 Comments

By Hairuo Yi |Staff Writer| With election day right around the corner, CSUSB students are discussing propositions and our potential president. Students have their opinions about Propositions (Prop.) 64 and 63, which discusses marijuana legalization and gun control. Some students agree with Prop. 64 which legalizes marijuana; they think marijuana is similar to alcohol or tobacco. “Marijuana being legal is not a bad thing at all,” said biochemistry student, Brandan Garcia. Students think Prop.63, which would require anyone who wishes to purchase ammunition to first acquire a permit, is unnecessary. Students also have comments about Prop. 56, which increases the tax on … [Read more...] about Student Perspectives on the Presidential Election

Skills employers wish college graduates had

February 26, 2014 by Archived posts 156 Comments

By Clarissa Toll |Staff Writer| It takes more than just the knowledge in a specific field to be hired. Employers want applicants to display “soft” skills, or personal communication skills. According to Fox Business, recent college graduates are lacking professional skills that will get them hired in today’s job market. “Despite their persistent use of social media and texting, a top complaint from employers about Millennial-age workers is their lack of communication skills,” said Kathryn Buschman Vasel of Fox Business. These soft skills, also known as people skills, focus on the college graduate’s communication skills in interpersonal interactions and their ability to work in … [Read more...] about Skills employers wish college graduates had
