San Bernardino has suffered from low high school graduation rates for years, but has been on a gradual incline since 2010. However, the topic of grade school dropouts has been overlooked in favor of college dropouts, which has received much more media attention. According to the California Department of Education, the graduation rates for San Bernardino County schools in 2015-2016 was 82.6 percent. I think the importance of sexual consent should be taught nationwide from middle school to undergraduate college students. "Gov. GEAR UP receives financial support
By Jorge Campos |Staff Writer| The U.S. Department of Education awarded funds to the CSUSB GEAR UP program. The grant provides $14.2 million, which will be used for tutoring, mentoring, college visits, and workshops for middle and high school students. The GEAR UP program is also working with the San Bernardino City Unified School District to provide services for eight middle schools and six high schools. GEAR UP has helped low income middle and high school students attend college by providing six-year grants to states and partnerships. Huffman: Not ready to give up basketball
By Erin Leach |Staff Writer| CSUSB student athlete Kristen Huffman is leaving the Cal State Community this year after two seasons of playing with the women’s basketball team. Huffman and the other seniors are finding it difficult to part from such a driven, dedicated team. So far this season the senior forward has played 182 intense minutes of basketball and says she doesn’t regret any of it. Huffman has put 34 total points on the board for the Coyote women. The informational was held in the College of Education building room 105 for students in grades 6-8 and parents interested in learning about how to prepare for future educational opportunities. By, Julia Matulionis |Staff Writer| For young adults (ages 18-29) unemployment is at 12 percent, compared to the 7.9 percent rate of unemployment for the entire nation, according to a recent press release by Generation Opportunity, a non-profit organization. Among other things, this can be contributed to lack of opportunity and the organization is urging young people to pay closer attention to politics and get out and vote.
