The Wire still sets the standard for television perfection

August 4, 2015 by Archived posts 145 Comments

By Daniel DeMarco |Copy Editor| Some people want more from their entertainment than, well, entertainment. Unfortunately for those people, fulfilling that need can prove difficult due to the obvious reason that this sort of product is much more artistically demanding to make and thus, not abundant in supply, but also because the spotlight is often reserved for the worst of the worst in radio pop music, reality television, and further simple-minded entertainment. “The Wire” is routinely included in the lineup of countdowns for “the greatest television show/drama ever.” Entertainment Weekly announced it as number one on their list in 2013. On IMDb, the series holds a … [Read more...] about The Wire still sets the standard for television perfection

True Detective shines as dark, complex crime drama with season two

July 7, 2015 by Archived posts 7 Comments

By Daniel DeMarco |Copy Editor| Recent years have brought us some excellent television series which challenge even the quality of revered products released in theaters. HBO’s “True Detective” is one of those series that seems to often get stepped over in discussion of quality television, but it deserves your attention if it hasn’t gotten it already. In early 2014, the series debuted as a not-so-typical crime drama, starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as two detectives engaged in a sprawling investigation for a serial killer in the deep south of Louisiana. The series was met with widespread critical acclaim, which made a follow-up season inevitable. Season two … [Read more...] about True Detective shines as dark, complex crime drama with season two

Game of Thrones

May 24, 2015 by Archived posts 25 Comments

By Marvin Garcia |Staff Writer| Dragons, kings and queens, death, sex, good versus evil, plus twists and turns are just a few words to explain Game of Thrones (GOT). Game of Thrones has raised the bar for all other epic-fantasy genre television shows. The series is set in the fictional continent of Westeros, where power and betrayal go side by side. In the wake of civil war, the five great houses battle against one another for the right to sit on the iron throne, as the menacing White Walkers (ice demons) approach from the north and dragon fire from the east. Never before has there been a show of such caliber as that of GOT thanks to the imagination of series author George R.R … [Read more...] about Game of Thrones

Mayweather-Pacquiao: Reflecting on a historic fight

May 4, 2015 by Archived posts 238 Comments

By Daniel DeMarco |Copy Editor| It happened. Sports history took place on the night of May 2. It was a night hosting one of the biggest prizefights of all time—certainly the most financially successful prizefight ever seen. After some six years of speculation, uncertainty, and anticipation, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao stepped into the ring for 12 rounds of boxing. This was a major title-unification fight, yes, but more so, this was the fight to finally settle the question of who really is the pound-for-pound, number-one fighter in the world. Going in, Mayweather was almost universally regarded as number one and Pacquiao as number two. The intrigue arose … [Read more...] about Mayweather-Pacquiao: Reflecting on a historic fight

“Girls” is a character study of women with first-world problems

April 17, 2012 by Archived posts

By Matthew Bramlett |Arts & Entertainment Editor| "Girls," HBO's newest offering and the brainchild of writer/director/star Lena Dunham, is a vaguely autobiographical show about privileged twenty-somethings and their desire to carve out a name for themselves in New York City. Dunham plays Hannah, a 24-year-old aspiring writer who is trying to write a memoir while lacking the life experiences to write an actual memoir. She survives solely on a monthly stipend from her college professor parents and works at an unpaid internship for a trendy Manhattan publishing firm. It is during the opening scene, where Hannah's parents decide to cut her off after two years of financing her … [Read more...] about “Girls” is a character study of women with first-world problems

HBO teases fans with new “Game of Thrones” trailer

February 7, 2012 by Archived posts 9 Comments

By Justin Mathew Dennis |Staff Writer| HBO’s hit series, “Game of Thrones,” is debuting its dynamic second season on April 1. "Game of Thrones" released its first season last year, with intentions of drawing in faithful fans of the Lord of the Rings saga. Based on the best-selling fantasy book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin, the producers had their hands full with trying to please both die-hard fans and new comers to the series. The writers and executive producers, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, worked hard not to disappoint the devoted fans, figuring out what to add in or leave out when transferring the book series to the TV screen. The Hollywood … [Read more...] about HBO teases fans with new “Game of Thrones” trailer
