Greek misconceptions debunked
By Samantha Romero |Staff Writer| Greeks on campus, misconceptions debunked. When you think about Greek organizations on campus, what comes to mind? There are some people who see Greeks as extreme partiers, slackers, social conformers, and overall, terrible human beings who take up space on college campuses. While Greeks are cast in this kind of distasteful light by the media, that is not always the case. There are 17 different Greek organizations on campus and each of these organizations give to a different philanthropy they are actively involved with. For example, Alpha Delta Pi's philanthropy is the Ronald McDonald House Charities, Delta Sigma Phi's is the American Red … [Read more...] about Greek misconceptions debunked
Don’t be fooled, Greek life is more than just a party
By Aunjolay Lambert |Staff Writer| I feel some people don’t understand what you can gain by being in a sorority or fraternity. I think that sometimes TV and movies can alter a person’s view of reality and I think in this case Greek organizations get the brunt of that. For example movies like “Old School” and “Animal House” can suggest that fraternities and sororities are around just to have a good time. “Some of the negative things I’ve heard are that the girls are easy and the guys just like to drink and party,” said Ashlynne Macan, a member of a co-ed fraternity at CSUSB. Last summer I went on vacation to Virginia and my cousin, who is in a sorority, showed me around her campus … [Read more...] about Don’t be fooled, Greek life is more than just a party

Theme of the weekend…
By Steph Paniagua |Staff Writer| So this last weekend was completely unlike my last weekend. Last weekend started off with me being sick, like super sick and bed ridden. As a result of that I missed out on a whole lot of social events and a community service event. This weekend, though, started off how I planned but didn't end like I planned. Friday and Saturday I was able to go out like a typical college senior and have a great time with people I truly care about. But today was the real highlight of my weekend. Today (Sunday) is the founding day of an organization called Kappa Delta Sorority, of which I am a proud member. Today marks it's 114th birthday. To celebrate this … [Read more...] about Theme of the weekend…
Black Greek organizations are losing life
by Vicki Colbert | Staff Writer| Minorities dominate 70 percent of the student body, yet they do not make up the majority of Greek life on campus. It’s an increasing issue especially for black fraternities and sororities where support is dwindling in support on campus. The first weeks of school are considered “Rush Week” for most Greek organizations at CSUSB. As I passed through the outside of the Santos Manuel Student Union, most Greek organizations were trying to recruit, but there were little to no black fraternities and sororities tabling among everyone else. Luckily, I wasn’t alone in my observation. Third-year student Kristina Hall said she was once interested in joining an … [Read more...] about Black Greek organizations are losing life
Greek Speak with Lindsey Martinovich
By Lindsey Martinovich |Staff Writer| It’s “paying for friends”, it’s “paying to drink” and it’s “paying to be promiscuous” are the most common reactions I get from people when they find out that I am in a sorority. These common misconceptions are so gross and unrealistic that they leave me speechless. Half of the time I find myself sarcastically shaking my head yes to such reactions, because I’ve found that my passionate two hour explanations of what being a part of a Greek organization truly means can be a bit overwhelming to outsiders; plus the conversation gets a bit awkward when I start crying and yelling… I’m kidding. I am also a realist and know that my defense falls upon … [Read more...] about Greek Speak with Lindsey Martinovich
Anonymity leads to animosity
By Rachel Cannon Staff Writer A news reporter whose migraine headache caused her to garble her speech on air during the Grammys has sparked a discussion about how the Internet is affecting our sense of empathy. The video clip of reporter Serene Branson’s “meltdown” quickly went viral, and all over the Internet, users were watching, laughing and making fun. It soon spread beyond the Internet; disk jockeys were joking at Branson’s expense on the radio as well. This behavior is outrageous and uncalled for – it suggests a lapse in our collective humanity. At least part of the fault of this shocking loss of empathy may lie squarely with the Internet. In the age of online video, we … [Read more...] about Anonymity leads to animosity
