Greek Life: A look inside

May 3, 2015 by Archived posts 3 Comments

By Cecilia Gutierrez |Staff Writer| As a sorority or fraternity member you reap many benefits. Membership benefits include leadership, involvement with school affairs, job opportunities, and networking skills. Juan Herrera, a former brother of Sigma Chi, serves as an example of how these networking opportunities attained from fraternity membership help during the pursuit of job opportunities after graduating from college. Herrera now works in CSUSB President Tomás Morales’ office (making a fair amount of money) and traveling on behalf of CSUSB. What gave him the upper-hand? Being a part of a fraternity. Many of us have seen movies that reflect the Greek Life, however, how … [Read more...] about Greek Life: A look inside

California Attorney Proposed Bill of Death for Gays

March 3, 2015 by Archived posts 5 Comments

By Maria Perry |Copy Editor| California attorney Matt McLaughlin has proposed an act that, if passed, will make sodomy between same-sex individuals a capital crime, according to Snopes.com. McLaughlin proposed the "Sodomite Suppression Act," which was received by the state's initiative coordinator at the Office of the Attorney General on Feb. 26 with $200 and initiative certification enclosed. It hopes to make it legal to execute gay individuals, according to The Huffington Post. The "Sodomite Suppression Act," which McLaughlin has sent to the state Department of Justice, will not only punish gays but also those who engage in sodomy, according to the the act's initiative. Pros and cons of The Greek life

April 26, 2014 by Archived posts 5 Comments

By Mark Kroppling | Staff Writer| The Greek life on campus is not typical of everything you see in the movies. Many sororities and fraternities focus on education, as well as giving back to the community, and this past week was a perfect example. Each sorority and fraternity chose an organization to provide their services. Sorority Lambda Data Alpha President Jessica Bracamontes likes what her sorority represents. “We are academic-based. We don’t focus a lot on parties,” said Bracamontes. “This week we have our philanthropy week, and we are doing Make a Wish,” continued Bracamontes. Upon weighing the pros and cons, Bracamontes said that not every student feels that going Greek … [Read more...] about Pros and cons of The Greek life

Alpha Phi honors Nia Telford

March 6, 2014 by Archived posts 57 Comments

By Gloria Gutierrez |Staff Writer| A 5K Glow Run was held Friday at CSUSB in honor and support of Alpha Phi’s Nia Telford who battled stage four cancer. On that rainy Friday, over 500 people gathered at 6 p.m. in the lower commons. Friends, family, community members and even students from other universities showed their support by attending the run. “The run was a celebration of Nia’s life,” said Dakota Ruiz, Alpha Phi president. It was put on by two Greek councils, Panhellenic Council (PHC) and Interfraternity Council (IFC). The Glow Run raised up to $2,600 and proceeds were designated to the Telford family. Ashley Mendez, a Kappa Delta Sorority member, made it out to the run … [Read more...] about Alpha Phi honors Nia Telford

You know you go to CSUSB when…

February 6, 2014 by Archived posts 723 Comments

By Adrian Carlos |Staff Writer| Endless Starbucks line, building frustration from waiting for a parking spot that seems will never appear and waking up frantically in the Student Union after over-sleeping. These are just a few of the things that unite us as students and characterize CSUSB pride. What makes CSUSB students different from students from other universities? I asked students around campus to give me their opinion on what embodies the students here. You know you're a CSUSB student when... "You see the sun come and go down on the same day from the library," said Ivanna Carlos. "When your favorite color and all your clothes are now blue," said Quinn … [Read more...] about You know you go to CSUSB when…

Famous Greeks

June 2, 2011 by Archived posts 721 Comments

By Lindsey Martinovich |Staff Writer| Politicians, CEO’s, founders of multi-million dollar companies, professional sport superstars and Hollywood celebrities find comfort in being a part of a fraternity or sorority. Is it a coincidence that so many successful men and women are a part of Greek organizations? Not a chance. No matter what the fraternity or sorority is, Greek Organizations all put a great emphasis on developing characteristics such as leadership, scholarship and ambition of young college students, leaving them with the ability to be the best version of them that they can be, and in some cases, even run a country. According to onlinecollege.org, former President of … [Read more...] about Famous Greeks

Greek Speak with Lindsey Martinovich

April 14, 2011 by Archived posts 181 Comments

By Lindsey Martinovich |Staff Writer| It’s “paying for friends”, it’s “paying to drink” and it’s “paying to be promiscuous” are the most common reactions I get from people when they find out that I am in a sorority. These common misconceptions are so gross and unrealistic that they leave me speechless. Half of the time I find myself sarcastically shaking my head yes to such reactions, because I’ve found that my passionate two hour explanations of what being a part of a Greek organization  truly means can be a bit overwhelming to outsiders; plus the conversation gets a bit awkward when I start crying and yelling… I’m kidding. I am also a realist and know that my defense falls upon … [Read more...] about Greek Speak with Lindsey Martinovich
