Overhaul of CA’s education system
By Andres Ibarra |Staff Writer| California’s educational system has come under some recent scrutiny. Neel Kashkari, Republican candidate for Governor of California, hopes to change that. Kashkari has ideas to overhaul the state’s educational system and change the way they’re funded. He hopes to make traditional schools more like charter schools, which also include increasing online education. One of his ideas is to send money directly to the schools rather than the school district and change the educational code so that schools operate like charters. Additionally he would increase the amount of time needed to attend school during the day and during the year, as well as increase … [Read more...] about Overhaul of CA’s education system

By Santiago Castillo |Staff Writer| The CSU system has $1.8 billion in critical maintenance backlog due to budget cuts. “CSU hasn’t received funding for deferred maintenance since 2007-08,” according to The San Bernardino Sun. Due to the maintenance backlog, the CSU system faces a crisis because it has disrupted education and remains a threat in the safety and effectiveness of buildings used for educational purposes. Nearly half of the CSU system buildings are more than 40 years old and infrastructure such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning are deteriorating. Statewide laboratories have been shutdown and other locations have faced power outages. Such occurrences have … [Read more...] about CA universities postpones maintenance
Completely legalizing marijuana becoming a possibility
By Devin Ramos |Staff Writer| Gov. Jerry Brown should reconsider his stance on the recreational use of marijuana in California and watch how Colorado and Washington have adapted to the newly legalized drug. The Huffington Post has reported that Gov. Brown said legalizing the drug would not be a good idea. “A certain amount is okay, but there is a tendency to go to extremes,” said Brown. “The world is pretty dangerous and competitive, I think we need to stay alert.” While our state grants us the ability to get a medical marijuana card, Brown’s statements question if adults know how to limit themselves. Proposition 215 made medical marijuana legal with a doctor’s consent for … [Read more...] about Completely legalizing marijuana becoming a possibility
Governor Brown Pushes For Prop. 30
By Brenda Acuna |Staff Writer| Nov. 6 marks a historic election for college students across California as they hit voting booths and determine the fate of public universities’ economic situation. During the 25-minute call, the Governor told the CSU newspapers that his tax measure comes down to a simple choice for voters: either provide funding for schools or allow additional education cuts that will hike up college tuition. Brown warned that if Proposition 30 fails, $1 billion would be cut from higher … [Read more...] about Governor Brown Pushes For Prop. 30

Gov. Brown proposes flat budget for CSU system
By Courtney Sims |Staff Writer| Gov. Jerry Brown’s new budget proposal for the California State University (CSU) system will affect all 23 of the CSU campuses. State funding allocated for the CSU system for the 2012-2013 academic school year will only be $2 billion, the lowest it's been since 1997-1998. Over the past two years the state’s budget has called for over $750 million in cuts to the CSU system, affecting students, parents and the CSU staff.
