By Danni Ybarra |Staff Writer| California Gov. Jerry Brown’s new budget proposal calls for an increase in higher education funding for the fourth consecutive year. Many hope the budget would hold to its current $142.2 million increase rate, however that was not the case. Instead the California State University (CSU) system will be receiving a $119.5 million increase from last year, according to the Los Angeles Times. The proposed budget falls in line with the governor’s multi-year stable funding plan for higher education, which seeks to provide “a 20‑percent increase in General Fund appropriations over a four‑year period (2013‑14 through 2016‑17)” as stated directly from the … [Read more...] about Governor Brown’s CSU fund falls short of expectations

Student success fees receive criticism
By Robin Alcantara |Staff Writer| The California State University (CSU) system is implementing additional mandatory fees despite an agreement made with Gov. Jerry Brown that would maintain tuition costs without increases until January 2016. The agreement would bring additional support to the CSU system from state funds if the tuition cost remained at the current $5,472 per year. Some CSU students, however, are experiencing higher educational costs charged by individual campuses through “student success fees” while standard tuition remains the same, according to the CSU website. “CSU must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees, … [Read more...] about Student success fees receive criticism
Gov. Brown’s proposal may increase CSUSB enrollment and expand courses
By Santiago Castillo |Staff Writer| Governor Jerry Brown plans to allocate $244 million to CSU and UC institutions. Earlier this month, Brown proposed his state budget funding, which included giving $10 billion to education. When asked how this funding could affect CSUSB, Associate Vice President of Finance, Monir Ahmed said, “If the budget is approved as proposed by the governor, the campus hopes to increase enrollment, add additional sections to existing courses, while keeping the fee flat.” Ahmed added, “We have a huge amount of infrastructure deficit, we need maintenance for some buildings that are quite old including this one [Sierra Hall] that needs to be renovated, taken down … [Read more...] about Gov. New proposal from Gov. Brown will fail community college students
By Brenda Acuna |Staff Writer| Community colleges play a fundamental role in the higher education system. Appropriate funding is needed to allow these campuses to be the stepping stone for college students. As a transfer student, I witnessed firsthand the problem with community colleges: a high demand for classes and not enough resources. I had to go to school full-time and commute to three campuses to transfer in two years. There are many community college students who don’t have the time or gas to do what I did. Gov. Jerry Brown’s new focus on community colleges grants them an additional $197 million in general-purpose funds next year. But while this is mostly good news, there’s a … [Read more...] about New proposal from Gov. Brown will fail community college students
Governor Brown Pushes For Prop. 30
By Brenda Acuna |Staff Writer| Nov. 6 marks a historic election for college students across California as they hit voting booths and determine the fate of public universities’ economic situation. In a recent conference call with CSU newspapers, Gov. Brown urged all college students to vote “yes” on Proposition 30 if they did not want their tuition to increase again. During the 25-minute call, the Governor told the CSU newspapers that his tax measure comes down to a simple choice for voters: either provide funding for schools or allow additional education cuts that will hike up college tuition. Brown warned that if Proposition 30 fails, $1 billion would be cut from higher … [Read more...] about Governor Brown Pushes For Prop. 30
