Banning abortion is a war on women

May 22, 2019 by Ashley Balmaceda Leave a Comment

The controversy stirred as news broke that Georgia, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, Mississippi and Alabama all signed abortion bans. These bills got signed at the hands of the GOP, and their goal is to eventually overturn Roe v. Wade, and with the Supreme Court majority being conservative, this is a real fear many women are facing. Five of the six states signed the “heartbeat bill” which means abortion is no longer allowed once a heartbeat is found. That could be as early as six weeks. That is usually the time a woman realizes she’s pregnant in the first place. Essentially, this bill forces women to carry out the pregnancy. Alabama leads the way with the 25 men voting in favor of the … [Read more...] about Banning abortion is a war on women

Overhaul of CA’s education system

May 10, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Andres Ibarra |Staff Writer| California’s educational system has come under some recent scrutiny. Neel Kashkari, Republican candidate for Governor of California, hopes to change that. Kashkari has ideas to overhaul the state’s educational system and change the way they’re funded. He hopes to make traditional schools more like charter schools, which also include increasing online education. One of his ideas is to send money directly to the schools rather than the school district and change the educational code so that schools operate like charters. Additionally he would increase the amount of time needed to attend school during the day and during the year, as well as increase … [Read more...] about Overhaul of CA’s education system

Obamacare leads to government shut down

October 5, 2013 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Andy Quintana |Staff Writer|   The federal budget failed to pass early October, because the “Grand Old Party” wanted to defund Obamacare once again. Obamacare should not have been involved in the decision to pass the federal budget. Obamacare should have been a separate issue from the budget altogether. Republicans have made efforts to put a holt on Obamacare for a long time. As the time came for a new federal budget to be created GOP seized an opportunity to defund Obamacare through; fear that a federal budget would not be passed, leading to a government shutdown. USA Today explained, “the motivation House Republicans had in placing an amendment to defund … [Read more...] about Obamacare leads to government shut down

GOP wages war on women

April 14, 2012 by Archived posts

By Rachel Cannon |Copy Editor| With the Republican presidential candidate all but decided, the race is heating up—but Mitt Romney is up against a huge demographic of female voters turned off by his party’s hostility towards females in what is being branded as a “War on Women.” It began early last year, with the House GOP unanimously passing H.R. 3. Although this bill was known as the anti-abortion bill, it managed to offend even pro-life women with its redefinition of rape as “forcible.” This new definition erased the trauma experienced by of millions of victims of same-sex, statutory, date rape and other types of rape under the new definition. From there, the GOP continued to … [Read more...] about GOP wages war on women

GOP leaders propose extension of payroll tax cuts

February 17, 2012 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Jazmin Jett |Staff Writer| San Bernardino county at 16 percent unemployment may have something to look forward to with the proposed extension on payroll tax cuts. The House of Representatives and U.S. Senate plan to extend a payroll tax cut and expand unemployment benefits. The anticipation is for a decision by Feb. 17. An extension of long-term unemployment benefits could be potentially included within the "$160 billion package," a package to offset trimming federal workers’ pay and other domestic cuts that Democrats refute. Though the extension was passed in late December, it was due to the Republican and Democratic parties’ reluctance to agree. Eventually, differing proposals … [Read more...] about GOP leaders propose extension of payroll tax cuts

Santorum takes lead in GOP primaries

February 12, 2012 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Jacqueline Scholten |Staff Writer| A surprise victory was given to Rick Santorum, former senator of Pennsylvania, who won all three election contests taking place on Feb 7. This has shaken the Mitt Romney campaign and reminded Republicans that there is a long way to go in the race for the Republican nominee. Santorum won elections in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado. Colorado and Minnesota were caucus elections and Missouri was a “beauty contest” primary, consequently no electoral votes were awarded for any of them. “I think it lends validity to the caucuses here in Iowa. It shows that it wasn’t a fluke that he’s showing well in other states,” says Tim Kapucian, Iowa’s state … [Read more...] about Santorum takes lead in GOP primaries

Debt ceiling rises on Capitol Hill

Obama Boehner

By Eric Brown |Managing Editor| After arduous debate in both houses of Congress, the Senate gave final approval to legislation to raise the nation's debt by $2.4 trillion in conjunction with cutting federal deficits. Having already passed Monday through the House, President Barack Obama is likely to sign the bill into law wiftly after months of debate have stalemated many efforts in Washington to move further in economic recover. As the trenches of partisan gridlock were dug, Obama and House Speaker John Boehner both proved unlikely allies in a hotly debated topic. While GOP and Tea Party hardliners apposed any raise in the debt-ceiling, Democrats and progress oriented Republicans … [Read more...] about Debt ceiling rises on Capitol Hill
