History of Coyote softball

June 5, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Taylor Glaze |Staff Writer| The Coyote softball program turns 29 this year. It started in 1987, 22 years after Cal State San Bernardino opened in '65.  The Women's College World Series, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship, began in 1982, and it was not long after (five years) that CSUSB was able to create a softball program. From 1987 to 1989, the team was under head coach Jo Anne Bly. She coached for three consecutive seasons, winning a total of 62 games and losing 42. Bly was one of six coaches who has been a part of the program over the years along with Sue Strain who was with them for three seasons from 1990 to 1993 and had a record of 84 wins … [Read more...] about History of Coyote softball

David Martinez with successful first season

May 12, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Taylor Glaze |Staff Writer| The Coyote baseball program has had major success after previous seasons thanks to new head coach David Martinez, who has helped turn the team around. Four months ago, the California Collegiate Athlete Association [CCAA] coaches believed that Cal State San Bernardino would struggle in its first season under Martinez, after finishing the last two seasons winning only 23 games combined. However, Martinez has led the Coyotes to the CCAA Championship. "I never really read into polls," stated Martinez. "We still have it posted in our locker room as a reminder that no one is giving us a chance. There is only one way to move and that is up," continued … [Read more...] about David Martinez with successful first season

May 12, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Taylor Glaze |Staff Writer| The Coyote softball team says goodbye to two seniors. Infielder Melissa Roberts and outfielder Arianna Hernandez have played their final game for the Coyotes softball program. Roberts joined the organization her freshman year in 2013 after lettering all four seasons and earning first-team All-Citrus Belt League honors as a senior from Yucaipa High School. "I learned to be loyal and honest at all times, to give respect to the people around you, and how to never give up and keep pushing forward no matter what the circumstances may be. I will definitely miss being apart of such a great program and I cannot wait to see where it goes," stated Roberts … [Read more...] about Softball seniors say goodbye to CSUSB

Softball sweeps finale

May 12, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Taylor Glaze |Staff Writer| The Coyote softball team finished their season with a sweep of the Cal State San Marcos Cougars (CSUSM), to earn them more than 30 wins for only the fourth time in the last 18 years. "It felt great. To beat a team in the CCAA 4 straight times is a huge accomplishment," said head coach Jim Maier. "We started the season strong, then fell off course in the month of March, but rebounded this last month by winning 14 of our last 18 games. We won 23 CCAA conference games," said Maier. Those 23 games were a part of history as this was the first time that team has won over 20 games two years in a row. Game one, on April 22, was a battle with the Coyotes … [Read more...] about Softball sweeps finale
