By Yera Nanan |Staff Writer| Nothing is more satisfying than a nutritious meal before tackling the day. When dealing with strenuous classes, making it to places on time and extra-curricular activities— college students may find that making time for breakfast can be difficult. Even if a student decides to have something for breakfast in the morning, it's more than likely something with little to no nutritional value. "Things like Pop-Tarts that will have genetically modified ingredients, synthetic sugars and all the things that cause inflammation in the body," said Licensed Nutritionist Lisa Fiore. Breakfast foods like Pop-Tarts, sugary cereals and other pre-packaged market … [Read more...] about Healthy breakfast makes a healthy student
By Janeth Jaimes |Staff Writer| I believe we should all be aware of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) because there are claims that it can increase our risk of bodily diseases and disorders. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. A study led by Siriporn Thongprakaisang et. al on human cells reported that low levels of glyphosate, a herbicide present on GMO crops, mimic the hormone estrogen and stimulated the growth of breast cancer cells, which was published in the Food and Chemical Toxicology journal. However, the agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology … [Read more...] about GMOs increase risk of harmful diseases

By Richard Fredendall and Patricia Turturro |Coyote Contributors| Genetically Modified (GM) food has gotten a lot of bad press lately. Thus, it is time to set the record straight about what we know about GM food. GM foods are created by taking genetic material (DNA) and inserting it into the genome of the organism being modified. Genetically modifying food is done to increase yields, prevent pest damage, and enable growth in harsh environments to name a few reasons. Many people seem to think that these modified foods will be harmful to us. This is simply not true, and you will not grow extra limbs. Current research has shown no difference in immune-related organs in mammals … [Read more...] about Science students weigh in on GM food controversy
By Suu Elen Manzano |Staff Writer| You are what you eat. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be genetically engineered. I want to know if the food I’m consuming was made in a laboratory. Much like Frankenstein, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) can be freaks of non-nature. GMOs are created in a lab by taking genetic material from one organism and putting it into the DNA of another. If this wasn’t controversial enough, then you also need to consider that no official study has ever been conducted to define the long term effects of consuming GMOs. For all we know, we could start growing extra limbs. According to a study done at Ohio State University, “Clinical … [Read more...] about Genetically altered foods are dangerous, not to mention nasty.
